The team attended Wikimania 2015 in Mexico City. There they participated in the Hackathon and met with individuals and groups of users. They also made several presentations ] and the .
Following Wikimania, we announced winners for the . Our thanks and congratulations to users ''Halan-tul'', ''Renessaince'', ''<span lang="ne" dir="ltr">जनक राज भट्ट</span> (Janak Bhatta)'', ''Vahe Gharakhanyan'', ''Warrakkk'', and ''Eduardogobi''.
For '''interface messages''' (translated at ), we saw the initiative affecting 42 languages. The average progress in translations across all languages was 56.5% before the translathon, and 78.2% after ('''+21.7%'''). In particular, Sakha improved from 12.2% to 94.2%; Brazilian Portuguese went from 50.6% to 100%; Taraškievica went from 44.9% to 85.3%; Doteli went from 1.3% to 41.2%. Also, while 1.7% of the messages were outdated across all languages before the translathon, the percentage dropped to 0.8% afterwards (-0.9%).
For '''documentation messages''' (on mediawiki.org), we saw the initiative affecting 24 languages. The average progress in translations across all languages was 26.6% before translathon, and 46.9% after ('''+20.3%'''). There were particularly notable achievements for three languages. Armenian improved from 1% to 99%; Swedish, from 21% to 99%, and Brazilian Portuguese, from 34% to 83%. Outdated translations across all languages were reduced from 8.4% before translathon to 4.8% afterwards (-3.6%).

'''Auto-fill features for citations''' can be enabled on each Misplaced Pages. The tool uses the ''']''' to convert a ] or ] into a pre-filled, pre-formatted bibliographic citation. You can see an animated GIF of the quick, ]. So far, about a dozen Wikipedias have enabled the auto-citation tool. To enable it for your wiki, follow the ].
Your wiki can customize the first section of the '''special character inserter''' in VisualEditor. Please follow the ] to put the characters you want at the top.
In other changes, if you need to fill in a ] and get it wrong, then you can click to get a new one to complete. VisualEditor can now display and edit ]. If you use the Monobook skin, VisualEditor's appearance is now more consistent with other software.
=== Future changes === | |||
The team will be changing the '''appearance of selected links''' inside VisualEditor. The purpose is to make it easy to see whether your cursor is inside or outside the link. When you select a link, the link label (the words shown on the page) will be enclosed in a faint box. If you place your cursor inside the box, then your changes to the link label will be part of the link. If you place your cursor outside the box, then it will not. This will make it easy to know when new characters will be added to the link and when they will not.
On the English Misplaced Pages, 10% of newly created accounts are now offered both the visual and the wikitext editors. A ] showed no significant difference in survival or productivity for new users in the short term. New users with access to VisualEditor were very slightly less likely to produce results that needed reverting. You can learn more about this by watching a video of the ]. The proportion of new accounts with access to both editing environments will be gradually increased over time. Eventually all new users have the choice between the two editing environments.

The location of the visual editor's preference has been changed from the "Beta" tab to ] on this wiki. The setting now says ''Temporarily disable the visual editor while it is in beta''.
This aligns en.wiki with almost all the other WMF wikis; it doesn’t mean the visual editor is complete, or that it is no longer “in beta phase” though.
This action has not changed anything else for editors: it still honours editors’ previous choices about having it on or off; logged-out users continue to only have access to wikitext; the “Edit” tab is still after the “Edit source” one. You can learn more at the ].

Hi Johnny, I have been contributing to Misplaced Pages for over five years but am still having some difficulty with HTML coding. And I know some experts who would be a great benefit to Misplaced Pages, such as my neighbor, a professor of Natural History and Environmental Biology, but he finds the HTML aspect confusing, so he has given up trying to contribute.
Also, you sent me a note about using British spelling such as favour and US spelling (favor) in Canadian items on Misplaced Pages. Most newspapers use US spelling here, while some publications use British spelling. So there is no clear rule on which to use. (<I>In a recent edit to the page Flexity Outlook (Toronto streetcar), you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Misplaced Pages has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Misplaced Pages articles.)</I> Does your comment mean that either spelling is fully acceptable in Canada? ] 13:45, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

Hello, | |||
=== Recent improvements ===
'''Educational features:''' The first time you use the visual editor, it now draws your attention to the {{Int:visualeditor-annotationbutton-link-tooltip}} and {{Int:visualeditor-toolbar-cite-label}} tools. When you click on the tools, it explains why you should use them. (]) Alongside this, the welcome message for new users has been simplified to make editing more welcoming. (]) More in-software educational features are planned.
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a research survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this ''''''.
'''Links:''' It is now easier to understand when you are adding text to a link and when you are typing plain text next to it. (], ]) The editor now fully supports ISBN, PMID or RFC numbers. (], ], ]) These ] use a custom link editing tool.
You do not have to be a Misplaced Pages Administrator to participate.
'''Uploads:''' Registered editors can now '''upload images''' and other media to Commons while editing. Click the new tab in the "{{int:visualeditor-toolbar-insert}} {{int:visualeditor-dialogbutton-media-tooltip}}" tool. You will be guided through the process without having to leave your edit. At the end, the image will be inserted. This tool is limited to one file at a time, owned by the user, and licensed under Commons's standard license. For more complex situations, the tool links to more advanced upload tools. You can also drag the image into the editor. This will be available in the wikitext editor later.
The survey should take around 10 to 15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its ] and view its ].
'''Mobile:''' Previously, the visual editor was available on the mobile Misplaced Pages site only on tablets. Now, editors can use the visual editor on any size of device. (]) Edit conflicts were previously broken on the mobile website. Edit conflicts can now be resolved in both wikitext and visual editors. (]) Sometimes templates and similar items could not be deleted on the mobile website. Selecting them caused the on-screen keyboard to hide with some browsers. Now there is a new "{{int:Visualeditor-contextitemwidget-label-remove}}" button, so that these things can be removed if the keyboard hides. (]) You can also edit table cells in mobile now.
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
'''Rich editing tools:''' You can now add and edit '''sheet''' '''music''' in the visual editor. (]) There are separate tabs for advanced options, such as MIDI and Ogg audio files. (] and ]) When editing '''formulæ''' and other blocks, errors are shown as you edit. It is also possible to edit some types of '''graphs'''; adding new ones, and support for new types, will be coming.

You will soon be able to '''switch from the wikitext to the visual editor''' after you start editing. (]) Previously, you could only switch from the visual editor to the wikitext editor. I have been accused of considering "fair edits" to be "vandalism", as I have reincluded content that was removed by another user. Administrator EdJohnson says, "Would like to hear from others who can look at the diffs in the above complaint and give their opinion." As you seem to be an expert on vandalism and, as far as I can see, were not involved in content disputes on Elvis-related articles, you may be the right person to give a statement on ] from a neutral point of view. This user is a veteran Wikipedian among the top 1485 Wikipedians in edit count, editing since December 21, 2006, as a registered user. This user also holds the record for the longest current editing streak on the English Misplaced Pages with over 6000 consecutive days since November 2007 (over 17 years straight), the only one whose current streak began before 2008 and the top of the two whose current streak began before the SOPA boycott of January 18, 2012, despite participating in said boycott and the boycott is based on Eastern Standard Time as it is a United States congressional bill and all such bills are made in the capital of Washington, D.C., while the streak is based on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), as with the rest of Misplaced Pages. Read more in the Wikimedia Diff blog entry here. This user is also featured in a major nationally distributed reputable newspaper of a G7 country (see below). You can also see my impact here: Special:Impact/Johnny Au. Note that the editing streak counter in Special:Impact is not accurate and Misplaced Pages:Database reports/Longest active user editing streaks is preferred as the latter also accounts for non-mainspace edits and I make many non-mainspace edits, while Special:Impact only accounts for mainspace edits.

Toronto WikiClub meetup

- Thanks for the invite. However, I am busy on that day as I have other plans. Oh, and I post plenty of photos of buildings under construction on UrbanToronto anyways, especially The One skyscraper in downtown Toronto, which anyone can see without needing to register. However, uploading my photos to Misplaced Pages or Wikimedia Commons requires my permission as I took these photos on my iPhone 15 Pro Max. The One skyscraper, for example, I take photos of this building twice a week at or near the base of the structure and occasionally take photos of it from the York Beltline Trail near Dufferin Street near my neighbourhood. Therefore, I must politely decline the invitation. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:52, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
Invitation to participate in a research survey
Hello,
The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a research survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Misplaced Pages, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.
You do not have to be a Misplaced Pages Administrator to participate.
The survey should take around 10 to 15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement.
Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.
Kind Regards,
BGerdemann (WMF) (talk) 19:29, 23 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks. I will complete the survey once I have the time to do so. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:37, 24 October 2024 (UTC)
- However, the survey expired without any prior notice, which is a bad design as participants should have known the end date ahead of time. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 00:43, 9 December 2024 (UTC)
I'll save a place for you at The Signpost if you are interested
Hi Johnny. We're coming up on a 20th-anniversary edition of The Signpost. I noticed you were mentioned recently here. If you'd like to tell the readers more about this achievement and your long-term involvement in Misplaced Pages more generally, I'll save you a place. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:09, 17 December 2024 (UTC)

- You can add your essay to this article outline. I provided a brief intro with what I imagine you might create, but plan to re-write the intro after I see what you have created. Here's hoping you enjoy writing. If you need anything just ping me. ☆ Bri (talk) 17:38, 18 December 2024 (UTC)

Johnny, thanks so much for your contribution! I'm wondering if you can put a little more into it for the retrospective nature of the upcoming issue. For instance (don't take this if you don't like it): describe how you feel about having the #1 streak, and what would happen that might make you lose it and how you would feel about that; are you holding on to that position any more strongly now that it's been noted, or would you be doing the very same thing if nobody ever mentioned it; do real-life people know this about you, and do you think they should? I'm looking for any more personal reflections you might be able to provide on your involvement with Misplaced Pages and the community, how internal Wiki stuff relates to the outside world and how we as Wikipedians relate to the outside world, different personas we take in in the two arenas (or maybe don't!). Anything you can do along these lines is welcome! ☆ Bri (talk) 22:34, 19 December 2024 (UTC)
