==Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity==
I haven't edited much in the last few years because I was busy with work and other "real life" things, but I always figured I'd come back to contribute eventually. I love reading, writing, researching, and – above all – learning. I do not love drama, bureaucracy, cliquishness, or any of the other distractions that plagued Misplaced Pages when I was active, and it was cathartic to take a long break from caring about policies, guidelines, and procedures. During my absence, it seemed to me that the project was heading in the right direction: There were new UI features to make editing friendlier and easier for new users, for example, and I noticed last year that the ] had increased exponentially. (My memory is spotty, but it feels like when I first started editing, the foundation had no more than a couple dozen full-time employees.) As far as I could tell while removed from all the on-wiki goings-on, the project was healthy and growing.
]
Following a ] in June 2011, consensus was reached to ] (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return&nbsp;if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated&nbsp;should this occur, please post to the ] and the userright will be restored per the ] (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at ]. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. <!-- Template:Inactive admin -->Regards, — ] ] 06:46, 1 January 2014 (UTC)
:I'm still lurking around, just terribly busy in real life right now. <span style="font-family:Georgia;font-size:80%;">'''/]]]'''</span> 02:47, 12 January 2014 (UTC)

I saw the news earlier this year that Lila Tretikov was stepping down as executive director of the foundation; this struck me as unusual, given the brevity of her tenure. But I wasn't aware of the entire saga of apparent management and communication failures until I stumbled upon ]'s this week. I hadn't even heard of "Discovery" or any plans about a knowledge engine.
== A decline at AFC ==

I am not anti-change or anti-innovation. Frankly, I don't care if the foundation decides to invest money into building a Google or Wolfram Alpha competitor. In fact, I think the community is often too stubborn and conservative when it comes to change. But what worries me is the apparent way in which mismanagement has led to a lack of oversight, transparency, and communication. The project leadership has lost sight of its core principles and, in the process, alienated a lot of community leaders for whom I had great respect. I was shocked to see how many foundation employees, many of whom began as regular old editors, have left in the past two years. The community does not run the foundation, but it's the lifeblood of the foundation's projects. The community doesn't always have to agree with the foundation's decisions, but it needs to trust the foundation and ultimately take a leap of faith and buy into the decisions that are made. It's clear to me that the trust has eroded, and there is no buy-in.
I know this is ancient history, but some of these old declines are just coming to light as a result of CSD G13 reviews. Just in case you are still declining articles on the same basis, I would like to point out to you that the decline reason given in is invalid. Formatting of references is not grounds to decline an article (it would not be grounds for deletion at AFD). Only the ''content'' and ''quality'' of references is relevant. ''']]''' 00:55, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
:I only placed the article on hold. Looks like a different user actually declined the article. If my memory is correct, in 2010, it was recommended (or at least regular practice) that articles without inline citations be placed on hold, especially if some of the references are behind paywalls or in print (as was in this case, it seems). The problem is that AfC reviewers don't know which references support what content in the article, so simply moving such an article, particularly a BLP, into mainspace wasn't generally acceptable under the 2010 guidelines as I remember them. I haven't been active at all in the past year, and I know that AfC has undergone quite a few changes since then, so feel free to do whatever with the article if policies now differ. <span style="font-family:Georgia;font-size:80%;">'''/]]]'''</span> 07:48, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
::The article has been reset so that it gets a fresh review. The reason I am following up these old declines is that I believe the AFC project has played a big part in driving away new editors. Hundreds of thousands of pages have now been put up for G13 deletion. In reviewing them, I find that I am prepared to move at least one in ten of them to mainspace. There may well be a lot more that could be rescued; some kinds of articles I just pass over and leave to others to deal with. That just has to mean that tens of thousands of new editors have been blown off by AFC and in most cases are lost for good.
::When there is an article in mainspace where we cannot access the sources, we assume good faith (one of our ''core'' policies). This is still the case even at reviews like DYK and GA. FA does a source check but would still not decline on accessibility grounds. AGF has always been a core policy and the AFC reviewing instructions have never said anything about inline citations (I checked back to May 2010). If it was in mainspace we would not speedy delete or AFD on those grounds. We might template it, but that option is open to AFC reviewers also. There is no excuse, and never has been an excuse, for AFC behaving differently. ''']]''' 09:28, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
:::My experience at AfC—and I'm speaking solely for myself during the time I was active there—does not match your characterization of the project. I was also active in the AfC IRC channel, which, at least during that time, functioned as a sort of online help desk for new users having trouble with AfC. My experience was that many of the articles submitted were by users who never seemed to check back to see if there were problems that needed to be addressed. Many others were users whose sole goal was to have a particular article created and had no intentions of "joining" Misplaced Pages, i.e., PR people and the like. I don't consider these users to have been driven away by AfC, merely that they never intended to be regular editors. I also interacted with many users who were genuinely interested in improving their article submissions and who were helped, through AfC, to create mainspace-appropriate article submissions. Probably the majority of these interactions for me occurred in the IRC channel.
:::My point about the particular article you brought to my attention is not accessibility. I've used plenty of non-online citations in articles to which I've contributed, and that's by no means a problem. The main issue is that, guidelines aside, AfC reviewers generally did not accept BLPs without quality inline citations because a list of references doesn't necessarily support all or most or even more than one assertion in an article. I could have a list of thirty sources at the bottom of an article about ] pertaining only to his journalism career but twenty paragraphs in the article about how he killed a president—just because there's a list of sources doesn't mean that all of the material is verifiable. And at AfC, while I was active there, such a situation was grounds to place the article on hold (not generally decline). I'm not of the mindset that AfC existed so we could move poorly sourced articles to mainspace and immediately stick some maintenance templates on them. I also think that AfC was more concerned about quality over quantity, i.e., that even if a subject is notable, that is not an excuse to create an article that doesn't meet the basic criteria of verifiability and slap a template on there so it becomes part of someone else's backlog. So in this regard, I think our opinions differ on how AfC ''should'' operate—again, I don't know how it works nowadays, but when I was involved, I recall this as the de facto consensus of how article submissions should be treated. AfC was also a much smaller, specialized operation that didn't have a backlog anywhere close to over a thousand submissions.
:::Perhaps inline citations was not explicitly mentioned in the AfC guidelines, but it has become the indisputable standard for verifiability in articles these days. ] says: "A ''general reference'' is a citation that supports content, but is not linked to any particular piece of material in the article through an inline citation. General references are usually listed at the end of the article in a References section. They are usually found in underdeveloped articles, especially when all article content is supported by a single source. They may also be listed in more developed articles as a supplement to inline citations." So I don't think that placing an article on hold to ask for inline citations is terribly unreasonable.

I still love the idea of building up a repository of the world's knowledge. I still love researching topics that pique my interest and I still love writing. But I don't think I could care enough about Misplaced Pages to spend hours writing articles now after seeing how the leadership has alienated the very people who built their projects up – both volunteers and staffers – while neglecting the crucial tenets of transparency and accountability.
== Your assistance please ==

I'll return when I think I can care enough again, but until then, thanks for all the fish, and try not to take this place so seriously. (Seriously, lighten up!)
I believe we had a couple of discussions over the ] article, and what steps I should take, prior to re-introducing to article space an article with changes that addressed the concerns expressed at {{tl|afd}}. I kept updating the userspace draft, until June of last year, when ] was deleted. At that point I placed a {{tl|db-u1}} on the userspace draft, and took it to another wiki, where I added a couple more updates.

The 2014 WikiCup is off to a flying start, with, at time of writing, 138 participants. The is the largest number of participants we have seen since 2010. If you are yet to join the competition, don't worry- the judges have agreed to keep the ''']''' for a few more days. By a wide margin, our current leader is newcomer {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Godot13}}, whose set of ], the first FPs of the competition, was worth 490 points. Hi {{BASEPAGENAME}},
Featured articles, featured lists, featured topics and featured portals are yet to play a part in the competition. The judges have removed a number of submissions which were deemed ineligible. Typically, we aim to see work on a project, followed by a nomination, followed by promotion, this year. We apologise for any disappointment caused by our strict enforcement this year; we're aiming to keep the competition as fair as possible.

In order to better control the quality of new pages, keep out the spam, and welcome the genuine newbies, the ] is being updated and improved. The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group '''New Page Reviewer''' has been created.
Wikipedians interested in friendly competition may be interested to take part in ]; unlike the WikiCup, The Core Contest is not about audited content, but, like the WikiCup, it is about article improvement; specifically, The Core Contest is about contribution to some of Misplaced Pages's most important article. Of course, any work done for The Core Contest, if it leads to a DYK, GA or FA, can earn WikiCup points.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most ''current'' experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.
If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on ]. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to help keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on ], and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. == WikiCup 2014 February newsletter ==

]
And so ends the most competitive first round we have ever seen, with 38 points required to qualify for round 2. Last year, 19 points secured a place; before that, 11 (2012) or 8 (2011) were enough. This is both a blessing and a curse. While it shows the vigourous good health of the competition, it also means that we have already lost many worthy competitors. Our top three scorers were:
<big>'''''Greetings Recent Changes Patrollers!'''''</big>

This is a '''one-time-only''' message to inform you about technical proposals related to Recent Changes Patrol in the ''']''' that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Godot13}}, a WikiCup newcomer whose high-quality scans of rare banknotes represent an unusual, interesting and valuable contribution to Misplaced Pages. Most of Godot's points this round have come from a large set of pictures used in ].
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Adam Cuerden}}, a WikiCup veteran and a finalist last year, Adam is also a featured picture specialist, focusing on the restoration of historical images. This month's promotions have included a carefully restored set of artist ]'s work.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|WikiRedactor}}, another WikiCup newcomer. WikiRedactor has claimed points for good article reviews and good articles relating to pop music, many of which were awarded bonus points. Articles include ], '']'' and ].

# ]
Other competitors of note include:
# ]
# ]

# ]

Further, there are ] that you may be interested in reviewing. (and over 260 proposals in all, across many aspects of wikis)
*{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Hahc21}}, who helped take '']'' through good article candidates and featured article candidates, claiming the first first featured article of the competition.
*{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Prism}}, who claimed the first featured list of the competition with ].
*{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Cwmhiraeth}}, who takes the title of the contributor awarded the highest bonus point multiplier (resulting in the highest scoring article) of the competition so far. Her high-importance ], now a good article, scored 108 points.

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.
After such a competitive first round, expect the second round to also be fiercely fought. Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 1 but before the start of round 2 can be claimed in round 2, but please do not update your submission page until March (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally.

== Today's Wikipedian 10 years ago ==
Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Adam Cuerden}} was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from '']'', lithographs of various warships (such as ]) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Godot13}}, whose featured list ] contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|ChrisGualtieri}} who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including ], on Connecticut-related topics. The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Godot13}}, a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Casliber}} is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Czar}} was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Adam Cuerden}} was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Cwmhiraeth}} won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|12george1}} is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Sturmvogel 66}}, the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Bloom6132}}, the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Matty.007}}, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|ThaddeusB}}, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|WikiRedactor}}, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Figureskatingfan}}, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Yellow Evan}}, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Prism}} and {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Cloudz679}} have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The ] will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the ], which the organisers plan to run next year. There is now ''']''' for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? <!-- Type your question or comment under this line... -->

I have personal accounts of interacting with the person the article is about.

I basically have a page of memories. I have no proof of me knowing him because the person himself was barely known. The story(s) I have to tell would not conflict with the current content. It is a story that takes a side of a discussion, dispute, debate, etc.

Just fond memories of meeting a colorful character when I was very young.

Is there a place for this type of content?

I did try to resubmit my context a few times before I realized it was only disallowed for ASCII art. I was trying to make a line break or rather differentiate my content from the rest.

So technically I could probably submit the content again without a trigger but I do not want to do this just to have it taken down at a later date.

Someone did take down a fairly large amount of text of mine with no apparent explanation but that is neither here nor there at this point.

This is the article I want to add my story to - https://en.wikipedia.org/Loy_Allen_Bowlin

== WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner... ==

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to ''']'''. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

*We would like to announce that Josh (]) and Ed (]), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
*In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (]) and Christine (]), who are joining Brian (]) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the ], which she now co-runs.
*The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on ] and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Misplaced Pages.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on ], on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. <small>You are receiving this message because you are listed on ].</small> ] (]), ] (]), ] (]), ] (]) and ] (]) 18:54, 7 December 2014 (UTC)

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Freikorp}} owing most of his 622 points scored to a ] on the 2001 film '']'' which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant5|Godot13}} had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant4|Sturmvogel_66}} led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

*{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|AHeneen}} worked-up the ] article, also to Good Article status;

] is a long-period ] discovered on 17 August 2014 by ]; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|The Herald}} during the second round.]]
The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Casliber}} in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on ] and ] - both of which received the maximum bonus.
Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.
*{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Coemgenus}} was one of several users who worked on improving ]. Remember, you do not need to work on an article on your own - as long as each person has completed significant work on the article during 2015, multiple competitors can claim the same article.
*{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Cwmhiraeth}} took ] to Good Article for a 3x bonus - and if that wasn't enough, they also took ] there as well for a 2x bonus.
*{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|LeftAire}} worked up ] to Good Article for the maximum bonus. Hamilton was one of the founding fathers of the United States and is a ].

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Good luck to all competitors for the third round! {{User4|Figureskatingfan}}, {{user4|Miyagawa}} and {{User4|Sturmvogel 66}} 16:32, 4 May 2015 (UTC)

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant3|Casliber}} in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was {{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Coemgenus}} at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Casliber}}, who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Godot13}}, second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Cwmhiraeth}}, first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Harrias}}, second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about ] and military history, specifically the 1640s ].
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|West Virginian}}, from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Rodw}}, from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about ] and a FT about ].
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Rationalobserver}}, from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
#{{Misplaced Pages:WikiCup/Participant6|Calvin999}}, also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!

== WikiCup 2016 is just around the corner... ==

Hello everyone, and we would like to wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2016 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to ''']'''. There are some changes we'd like to announce before the competition begins.

After two years of serving as WikiCup judge, ] has . He deserves great thanks and recognition for his dedication and hard work, and for providing necessary transition for a new group of judges in last year's Cup. Joining Christine (]) and Jason (]) is Andrew (]), a very successful WikiCup competitor and expert in ]; he won the two previous competitions. This is a strong judging team, and we anticipate lots of enjoyment and good work coming from our 2016 competitors.

We would also like to announce one change in how this year's WikiCup will be run. In the spirit of sportsmanship, Godot13 and ] have chosen to limit their participation. See for the announcement and a complete explanation of why. They and the judges feel that it will make for a more exciting, enjoyable, and productive competition.

The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on ] and talk pages. The judges are committed to not repeating the confusion that occurred last year and to ensuring that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Misplaced Pages.

If you have any questions or concerns, the judges can be reached on ], on their talk pages, or by email. We hope you will all join us in trying to make the 2015 WikiCup the most productive and enjoyable yet. <small>You are receiving this message because you are listed on ].</small> ] (]), ] (]), and ] (]).--] (]) 06:46, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Can you please help and guide to write the article on the Indian Sitar artist. I have made the draft but anyhow it is not getting approved.
Here is the link of the draft.

https://en.wikipedia.org/Draft:Asad_Khan_%28musician%29

This is my first article on Misplaced Pages. Due to insufficient knowledge of writing this article its not getting approved.

] (]) 09:05, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

* I am leaving your help request open, in case anyone else can add anything helpful, but I will give you my thoughts. I looked at the draft, and checked its references. Almost all of them had one or more of the following problems: (1) not a reliable source; for example, some of them were Misplaced Pages articles, one was an article not mentioning Asad Khan, but with a mention of him in a blog-like post added by a reader, (2) didn't mention Asad Khan at all, (3) barely mentioned Asad Khan; for example, merely including his name in a list of credits. The only source which gave significant coverage of him was a page at www.germany-and-india.com, but that was just a report on one concert performance, and in any case it was on a web site the purpose of which is to publicise and promote the event that he played at. None of those sources comes anywhere near showing that he satisfies Misplaced Pages's ].
* Are you sure that he does satisfy the notability guidelines? If he does, then you need to provide references to sources which show that he does, but if he doesn't, then any work you put into the draft will be wasted: while many faults with articles (or draft articles) can be cured by suitable editing, no amount of changing '''an article''' can ever change the notability of '''the subject''' of the article. I suggest the first thing to do is to carefully check whether there exist sources establishing that he is notable or not. Check the ] and any other notability guidelines that seem relevant, such as ], and the ].
* Although it was not given as the reason for the draft being rejected, I also noticed one or two bits of wording which came over as promotional or laudatory, rather than objective reporting from a ], such as the use of the word "maestro" and the expression "torch bearer". <small>''The editor who uses the pseudonym''</small> "]" (]) 10:56, 2 March 2016 (UTC)

Thanks for your reply on my query about the Asad Khan Draft above. I have edited it so it will look from neutral point of view. Can you please look on this one more time? This artist is really notable artist and I have personally heard his music and surely he is a notable. I am trying to find the more reliable sources. Will come to this soon. Let me know more if you can guide more on this?

Also I have notices some other artist who are not much notable and not have enough references still they have article about them on the Misplaced Pages. I wonder how is that possible.

During my absence, it seemed to me that the project was heading in the right direction: There were new UI features to make editing friendlier and easier for new users, for example, and I noticed last year that the number of WMF staff had increased exponentially. (My memory is spotty, but it feels like when I first started editing, the foundation had no more than a couple dozen full-time employees.) As far as I could tell while removed from all the on-wiki goings-on, the project was healthy and growing.

I saw the news earlier this year that Lila Tretikov was stepping down as executive director of the foundation; this struck me as unusual, given the brevity of her tenure. But I wasn't aware of the entire saga of apparent management and communication failures until I stumbled upon GorillaWarfare's timeline this week. I hadn't even heard of "Discovery" or any plans about a knowledge engine.

I'll return when I think I can care enough again, but until then, thanks for all the fish, and try not to take this place so seriously. (Seriously, lighten up!)

The documentation and tutorials have also been revised and given a facelift. Most importantly a new user group New Page Reviewer has been created.

Under the new rule, you may find that you are temporarily unable to mark new pages as reviewed. However, this is nothing to worry about - most current experienced patrollers are being accorded the the new right without the need to apply, and if you have significant previous experience of patrolling new pages, we strongly encourage you to apply for the new right as soon as possible - we need all the help we can get, and we are now providing a dynamic, supportive environment for your work.

Find out more about this exiting new user right now at New Page Reviewers and be sure to read the new tutorial before applying. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 04:29, 13 November 2016 (UTC)

ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Hello, Fetchcomms. Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2016 election, please review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 22:08, 21 November 2016 (UTC)

RC Patrol-related Proposals in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey

Greetings Recent Changes Patrollers!

This is a one-time-only message to inform you about technical proposals related to Recent Changes Patrol in the 2016 Community Wishlist Survey that I think you may be interested in reviewing and perhaps even voting for:

  1. Adjust number of entries and days at Last unpatrolled
  2. Editor-focused central editing dashboard
  3. "Hide trusted users" checkbox option on watchlists and related/recent changes (RC) pages
  4. Real-Time Recent Changes App for Android
  5. Shortcut for patrollers to last changes list

Further, there are more than 20 proposals related to Watchlists in general that you may be interested in reviewing. (and over 260 proposals in all, across many aspects of wikis)

Thank you for your consideration. Please note that voting for proposals continues through December 12, 2016.

Note: You received this message because you have transcluded {{User wikipedia/RC Patrol}} (user box) on your user page. Since this message is "one-time-only" there is no opt out for future mailings.

Best regards, SteviethemanDelivered: 01:09, 8 December 2016 (UTC)

Good article reassessment for 2010 Shanghai fire

2010 Shanghai fire has been nominated for a good article reassessment. If you are interested in the discussion, please participate by adding your comments to the reassessment page. If concerns are not addressed during the review period, the good article status may be removed from the article. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 23:33, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

@Thebiguglyalien: Fetchcomms hasn't edited for almost 8 years. FYI. - FlightTime (open channel) 23:40, 17 March 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the heads up, but this was automated when I completed the listing. To my knowledge, there's no way to turn this off when using the GAR listing tool. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 23:41, 17 March 2024 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Eli Bridge Company

The article Eli Bridge Company has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable Company, no independent sources. Does not meet WP:CORP or WP:GNG.

While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
