The deletion of the major league wiffle page before it was finished truly angered me. There was no reason for the deletion and I feel that this page should be reinstated at least until it is finished then it can be reevaluated by the people who delete stuff on wikipedia.

The subject of the issue is irrelevant, for all it mattered it could have been dildoes or bunny rabbits. 3) I don't recall mentioning he violated any item in ]. :As far as I am aware, there is no proper protocol. Ben took it upon himself, despite previous discussion (see ]'s ), to add the "you should also vote" text to the AfD instructions. It has now been removed. So let's not have about uniliterally "changing official Misplaced Pages policy", ''please''.

:I understand why the "nominators should vote" suggestion was added: because of fears that nominators' intention might be ignored. However, I strongly disagree with it, as I explained on the AfD talkpage. The intention of the nominator should be made clear on this strength of her arguments; if it is not clear, ''then her arguments weren't very good'', and no amount of copy 'n' paste "I, the nom, vote delete per nom" bullet points can &ndash; or should &ndash; hide that fact. The fact is that a great many votes on AfD are pathetic. "nn d", the stereotype paraded about outside AfD, is quite true. At least one person should be able to explain why an article is deleted, and that person is the nominator. By encouraging the nomination to be Just Another Vote (which we have all seen happen, and not just from the pen of ]), we are doing a grave disservice not just to the articles, but to anyone who doesn't choose to label themselves as an extreme inclusionist.

:Why am I pointing this out in my comments to individual AfDs? For the same reason I am pointing out every good nomination, and every poor nomination. "AfD is broken", "the atmosphere is toxic", "the community is close-minded", all common refrains on Misplaced Pages, and not at all unjustified. I am trying to encourage good behaviour, and discussion on bad behaviour. It may not help, but it certainly cannot do any harm. Now, everyone I have asked about this nominator-voting thing has done one of three things: a) ignored the question; b) said "but I don't want my vote to be discounted if it gets close"; or c) said "it's in the instructions for using the template ... isn't it?". 'a' I can do nothing about, 'b' is patently silly, and 'c' is, as far as I am aware, entirely Ben's doing. I am hardly working against consensus; there is no consensus to work against.

Sorry but I cannot always find a link to back up my knowledge. It is well known that the Challenger's right SRB leak in 1986 caused a deviation in the shuttles trajectory altering it's vector. In fact the force was so great the other engines gimballed to compensate and that caused the srb to crush the expendable fuel tank. It will take awhile for me to find a link for this fact. It is under the Challenger Accident Investigation Board report.

I do not work for the website and had no intention of advertising it. It is an application that many of my friends and people from my school, the ], were using. I came to wikipedia and searched for the article to see what this site was about, as I often do when I encounter things I am unfamiliar with. I was surprised to find that there was no article on it (as a minute number of the plethora of search items I have entered in my life yield no results). So I googled it instead, and found it to be of significance and importance.

I spent some time researching the article and assembling the page. I do not understand why it was deleted, especially for the proposed reasons ( found here http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Special:Log/delete&page=Centsports), particularly the earlier accusation that it was blatant advertising. Websites such as Amazon, Ebay, Facebook, MySpace, Xanga, The Best Page in the Universe, Ain't It Cool News, FiLife.com, BibleGateway.com, and tons of other websites that I have never heard of before (like the last three I mentioned) have Misplaced Pages articles on them.

There is some controversy regarding the controversy regarding ITT Tech. I have a stated bias. (I guess maybe I should have kept that a secret.) At present the article is biased in the other direction. In my first year on Misplaced Pages, all I got was a welcome notice on my talk page (that I never referred to) and an unhelpful warning after I tried to delete a redirect by blanking the page. Everything I learned about Misplaced Pages has been through reading policies, guidelines and essays on my own, as well as editing, because I'm genuinely interested in it. Hey, thank you for telling me about it! It's nice writing, and I'm reading it over. It seems like it concentrates more a "slow down" kind of message than a ] kind of "don't panic", though that isn't a bad thing. There are things like POV or factuality issues with them in general, and many panics are generated outside of Misplaced Pages by the general media without people being aware of them; I think your paragraph focuses on panics triggered within Misplaced Pages. I think you've misunderstood what I said. I do not mean that we abandon the 7 day limit, I just mean that, if an RfA is closed a few hours late, as they usually are, that we allow anyone who gets in before the closure to be listened to. It seems crazy to say "well, I see that you have something to say, and you've said it, but I'm going to ignore it". On AfD, we routinely take account of all opinions stated up until the debate is actually closed, which frequently makes a difference since AfDs are usually closed late. I appreciate the note, Chairboy. I was creating the talk page in preparation for the actual articles which will not be prepared until Tuesday. Normally, I'd wait until the articles were created to create the talk page, but these five articles are listed on the missing dinosaurs page, and as soon as the links turn blue, we tend to have overzealous editors remove the blue links, meaning it's hard to tag the talk page without going back into the history to find out which dinosaur article was removed from the page. When you have over a thousand dinosaur articles, it's hard to guess which one was the one that was removed, which is why I placed the tag in preparation for the article. I'd had no problems doing this earlier, and you're the first person I've run across who speedy deleted dinosaur talk pages: we did this earlier with no problem for all the dinosaurs beginning with the letters F and G.--] 22:18, 21 May 2006 (UTC)

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are ] to "have strong passwords and ]." Taping of the Colbert Report starts around 7:00, and goes through with a few practices before the actual taping. I don't see why the user stevencolbert /wouldn't/ be stevencolbert, nor do I find it likely that he'll bother to respond to a voice mail, considering his long animosity with Misplaced Pages in the past. The deletion of the article "Major league wiffle" shouldn't have occured. The article was still being finished. It addressed the need for physical activity in a youths life and you should attempt to repel the deletion. It promotes the fun of a backyard game instead of most kids just playing video games. I have the same question. DoubleBlue improved the article, adding sources and meeting the objections of at least two editors who voted to delete. I think there was a consensus to keep, particularly since early objections must be discounted if later improvements to an article make those objections obsolete, as per the "Rough consensus" section of WP:DGFA (which gives as an example the precise situation found here). Centsports

You claimed this article didn't have an assertion of notability, which is completely untrue, as I the second sentence of the article was a direct statement of its notability.

I do not work for the website and had no intention of advertising it. It is an application that many of my friends and people from my school, the University of Florida, were using. I came to wikipedia and searched for the article to see what this site was about, as I often do when I encounter things I am unfamiliar with. I was surprised to find that there was no article on it (as a minute number of the plethora of search items I have entered in my life yield no results). So I googled it instead, and found it to be of significance and importance.

I spent some time researching the article and assembling the page. I do not understand why it was deleted, especially for the proposed reasons ( found here http://en.wikipedia.org/search/?title=Special:Log/delete&page=Centsports), particularly the earlier accusation that it was blatant advertising. Websites such as Amazon, Ebay, Facebook, MySpace, Xanga, The Best Page in the Universe, Ain't It Cool News, FiLife.com, BibleGateway.com, and tons of other websites that I have never heard of before (like the last three I mentioned) have Misplaced Pages articles on them.

"Blind" edit

Disambiguation pages are for articles, not spam links to web sites. If the subject of the site in question is notable enough for an article, then I welcome it. Otherwise, it doesn't belong because Misplaced Pages is not a linkfarm. In my first year on Misplaced Pages, all I got was a welcome notice on my talk page (that I never referred to) and an unhelpful warning after I tried to delete a redirect by blanking the page. Everything I learned about Misplaced Pages has been through reading policies, guidelines and essays on my own, as well as editing, because I'm genuinely interested in it. I've also had people revert my changes accusing me of doing things I wasn't, like here. So you're completely wrong in assuming what you are. Thank you for your note - glad that you liked the photo. I have taken about 10,000 airplane pictures since 2004 and I really wanted to share some of the better ones. Apocalypse Tapestry

Why on earth has this article been deleted ??? The item which the article described is the largest woven tapestry in the world. I am about to (re-)create the article as "Apocalypse Tapestry" as this is the name it is commonly known as, amongst English speakers. The French use the plural (tapestries of the...). MSU Interview

Dear Chairboy,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Misplaced Pages administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.


So a few things about the interviews:

  • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
  • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
  • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
  • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
  • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.


Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Extended confirmed protection

Hello, Chairboy. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Misplaced Pages:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.

A new user right for New Page Patrollers

Hi Chairboy.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However,due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

What prompted you to send this message?
Recently, several Misplaced Pages admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
  1. Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
  2. Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
  3. Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

Custom signature fix needed

Hi there! You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Misplaced Pages's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.

The problem: Your signature contains a syntax error, specifically formatting tags that are in the wrong order.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box.
  4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Change the signature as shown below, or make other edits to make the signature appear how you want it to appear.
  3. Click Save to update to your newly fixed signature.

ArbCom 2020 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2020 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 7 December 2020. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Administrators will no longer be autopatrolled

A recently closed Request for Comment (RFC) reached consensus to remove Autopatrolled from the administrator user group. You may, similarly as with Edit Filter Manager, choose to self-assign this permission to yourself. This will be implemented the week of December 13th, but if you wish to self-assign you may do so now. How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. New administrator activity requirement

The administrator policy has been updated with new activity requirements following a successful Request for Comment.

Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Roger roger! It's a good policy. My life has moved in a different direction and while I tried to get in some more admin activity in the last few months in response to the original notice, I can't seem to get that same old fire going. Maybe in a couple decades I'll be up for the challenge again and will get to find out what the admin request process of the 2040s or something looks like.
