Helen Giuliani (née D'Avanzo) was born in Brooklyn, on Sept. 26, 1909, to Luigi (Louis) and Adelena D'Avanzo.<ref name="RU">Barrett, Wayne ''Rudy!: An Investigative Biography Of Rudy Giuliani'', Basic Books; ISBN 0465005241, ISBN 978-0465005246 </ref> Her father, a barber who had emigrated from ] Italy,<ref name="RU" /> died in 1925, leaving her mother to raise her and her six siblings. Helen and her siblings were raised Roman Catholic.<ref name="RU" />

She met Harold Giuliani, a plumber and bartender, at a party in 1929 or 1930;<ref name="RU" /> They married in 1936, and had one child: ], in 1944. The family lived in ] until Harold died of prostate cancer in 1981,<ref name="BO">], Monday, September 9, 2002 </ref> after which time Helen moved to Manhattan's ].
