Hey, thanks for fixing the WP Bangladesh template, and adding it to several places. I also noticed that you've added your name to WP Bd... welcome there. Perhaps you might do some googling and work on some temples of BD? We have only 4-5 temple articles now ... but there should be more to represent the others.

To get you started with something related to Bengal and Bengali renaissance, how about ]? He is credited with one of the first Bengali prose "Hutom Penchar Noksha" (Recollections of an owl?). That's sort of a collection of essays on contemporary events in the 1850s Calcutta ... I've read it and it's interesting. Lo.. thanks for trying... actually Fundy Watch was never meant to be an explicitly anti-Muslim/anti-Pakistan cabal. It came along most due to childish vandalisms by ]. I believe Misplaced Pages has become needlessly bureaucratic. Admins have this habit of seeing Hindutvadis everywhere.. their behaviour infact encourages certain POV pushers. WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Misplaced Pages, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving ]. A number of the project's ] underwent ] over the past year. Of these, ] and ] survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, ], ], Darjeeling and ] were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as ], ] and ] were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of ], however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of ] saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.


Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced ] (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to ] currently. During February-April 2010, There was a of ] related articles by a ] based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP ] connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of ] and ] film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like ] as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.
if you are thinking so than i must clarify that I am not a hardline Atheist like, say Salman Rushdie. And we are not claiming that there are hindu atheists (though there are), we are just saying that even an atheist can be a hindu. This is important in the intro section as it is something unique to Hinduism. We are just talking about the philosophy part, so we dont need to have evidence for atheists among contemporary hindus. The other statement is this, which claims that majority of contemporary hindus are vedanta followers and they worship Even vishnu and Shiva in a form of cosmic spirit called brahmana. I guess it is completely wrong. Because this is just a view of Advaita vedanta and if there is a census, they wont find more than 1% followers. I'm stating what most academics accept as the truth. To tell you the truth, I'm ONE OF THE FEW PAKISTANIS ON THIS BLOODY ENCYCLOPEDIA THAT STILL ACKNOWLEDGES THE FACT THAT PAKISTAN AND INDIA WERE HISTORICALLY THE SAME CIVILIZATION. ASK ] FOR PROOF. I'VE RECEIVED HARSH CRITICISM FROM MANY PAKISTANIS ON HERE FOR "ACCEPTING INDIAN POV" UP TO THE POINT WHERE THEY ACCUSE ME OF BEING INDIAN! YOU ARE FOOLISH FOR MAKING SUCH ASSERTIONS! With regards to this theory, I think you've looked at the original version way too much and have completely ignored what modern mainstream academics show. The modern, updated version of this theory states that a linguistic group of Eurasian nomads who may have referred to themselves as "Arya" but were perhaps a tribal confederation of several old racial stocks speaking a common tongue, migrated to the subcontinent gradually in family groups. They gradually displaced the local population, driving them either south or absorbing them into their own society via the caste system. From genetics, it is proven that the majority of the migrants were probably male, so they intermarried with local women extensively. As a result, ALL SOUTH ASIAN PEOPLE have a common mitochondrial base dating back to the earliest homo sapien migrants to the subcontinent 30,000-50,000 years ago. It is in terms of y-chromosomes, that differences appear. Upper castes and northern indians tend to exhibit greater quantities of Eurasian genes in their Y-chromosomes. The greatest frequency, in fact, comes from the Punjabis, whose y-chromosomes are 40%-50% derived from ancient Eurasian nomadic migrants and invaders that came within the last 3000 years and later. The same is true for Kashmiris and other north indian groups, but it gets lesser as you go down the country. The languages, however, are known to have spread greatly beyond the genes, into Bengal, Assam, Maharashtra and the central regions, where probably only a few "Aryans" came and mingled with a mostly indigenous population who took on the languages. The same is true for the Sinhalese and the Maldivians. ( I think I butchered the latter nationality's spelling). This was probably more to do with the cultural influence of the Indo-Aryans and how their cultures spread through trade and acquisition, rather than through further population replacements. Thus, the peoples of the subcontinent are greatly mixed, yet all are the same and have the same mitochondrial ancestors from the dawn of human habitation in the subcontinent. Nevertheless, in the north and south, there do exist racial types that wouldnt be found in the other region. Many Punjabis in Northwest India and Pakistan have prominent, Afghan-influenced faces that wouldnt be found in say Tamil Nadu. Kashmiris have a racial type that most definetely would not be found anywhere within the south (except maybe ] where alot of Muslims came from similar regions anyway). You see, being located where it is, Indians and Pakistanis have a color tone that varies depending on how far or close you are to the equator. The closer you are, you will be more dark. Likewise, the more south your traditional homeland is in India, the more closer to the equator you are, and of course, you will be bound to be darker than someone from further north, such as a Kashmiri, Punjabi or even a Pashtun. Nevertheless, most Indians having the same mitochondrial base, also have similar genes in their y chromosomes, mixed in of course in varying degrees with invader ones, leading them to look more or less the same with variations. Now with regards to Hindu culture not existing outside of India. Actually, the modern version of this theory (which has archaeological and genetic proof)does not say in any way that Hinduism was brought to the subcontinent. It says that the nomads had a culture of their own that had several nature-based deities such as Indra and Varuna, and this religion mixed with the local Dravidian and tribal religions to form Hinduism. All the scriptures were written in the subcontinent, all the developments in the faith were made in India. The only foreign element are the Rig Vedic gods of Indra, Varuna, Agni, Mitra and others. And there is archaelogical proof showing these gods were worshipped outside of India, with no predating Indian contact. The Mitanni, an Indo-Aryan people who went west instead of going to the subcontinent, carried these deities with them to what is now Syria and Iraq. There is a treaty a Mitanni king made with the Hittites, that has been discovered that invokes these deities. Also, some of the verses in the Rig Veda (not the entire Rig Veda itself) are known to have come from the outside, as the Iranian Aryans used them in their Zoroastrian holy book, the ]. Also, discoveries in ] have also shed light on Indo-Aryan/Iranian practices being followed outside of both Iran and India. Nevertheless, what is now Hinduism is entirely rooted in India, most of its core concepts, such as Karma, reincarnation, yoga, and Dharma, as well as the main trinity, are rooted in the Dravidian civilization in the Indus Valley. Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us. These articles require ], that is, the addition of a WikiProject template to the talk page of an article, assessing it for quality and importance and adding a few extra parameters to it.

As of March 11, 2012, 07:00 UTC, WikiProject India has 95,998 articles under its stewardship. Of these 13,980 articles are completely unassessed (both for class and importance) and another 42,415 articles are unassessed for importance only. Accordingly, a ] drive-cum-contest has begun from March 01, 2012 to last till May 31, 2012.

Perhaps as a Sikh I should know more but I try and stick to reading only a minimum in connection with politics - you can never know who is telling the truth and who is lying. Further, it is a very ugly and depressing part of India's history for which all Indians are embarrassed and uncomfortable with the whole hideous sage. WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Misplaced Pages, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

    Copyright issue with Azizul Huque

    I'm afraid that the Azizul Huque article you wrote is a copyright infringement of Banglapedia, since the text is too closely paraphrased. While facts are not copyrightable, creative elements of presentation - including both structure and language - are. For an example of close paraphrasing, consider the following:

    During 1945 he began writing a book on the life of the Prophet which, though completed, remained unpublished due to his sudden death. In 1946, he was awarded the title of knighthood of a higher order. After the formation of a caretaker government in 1946, Azizul Huque returned to Calcutta and enrolled himself as a lawyer in the Calcutta High Court. Following the riots in Calcutta of August 1946 the Central Government constituted an Enquiry Commission in which Azizul Huque was one of the counsels. In support of the protest call given by the Muslim League against the Viceroy's actions, Azizul Huque renounced all titles bestowed on him by the British Government. He died of cerebral haemorrhage on 23 March 1947.

    The article says:

    WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 2 - November 2010

    English WikiProject News

    After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

    Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Misplaced Pages editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.


    What's New?

    Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

    The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

    The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

    In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.

    • The Bengali Wikisource, which contains the literary works of many prominent writers of Bengali language including Rabindranath Tagore, has crossed the 5,000 pages milestone. According to List of Wikisource page, Bengali Wikisource is now at rank 21 among 56 Wikisource based on number of content pages.
    The Tamil Misplaced Pages stall at the World Classical Tamil Conference 2010 in Coimbatore in June 2010.
    Jimmy Wales introduces the Malayalam Misplaced Pages CD of 500 selected articles during his key note address at Wikimania 2010 at Gdansk.
    • The Hindi Misplaced Pages and its sister wiki projects migrated to the new vector interface on September 1, 2010. In addition, Hindi is the first (and so far the only) Indian language to be incorporated into the WikiBhasha translation and contribution toolkit developed by Microsoft Research.


    Community news
    The first meetup in Delhi on 22 September 2010.

    Mumbai and Delhi held their first meetups in September, where Wikimedia Board members Barry Newstead and Bishakha Datta met up with Wikipedians and other interested members of the public in these cities. A month later, Hyderabad also held its first meetup.

    Arun Ram, Shiju Alex and Barry Newstead releasing the Wikimedia India community newsletter at the nineteenth Bangalore meetup on 24 September 2010.

    Wikipedians in Bangalore continued their tradition of meeting up regularly at the Centre for Internet and Society, with the nineteenth meetup in September featuring Barry and Bishaka as attendees, and marking the release of the community newsletter. Along with Delhi and Mumbai, Bangalore is reported to be one of the three cities in contention for the Indian office of the Misplaced Pages Foundation.

    Misplaced Pages founder Jimmy Wales had an interaction with Wikipedians followed by a presentation to members of the public at the third Misplaced Pages meetup in Mumbai on October 31, 2010.

    The first Wikimarathon, where Wikipedians and members of the public were encouraged to contribute to Wikimedia projects onsite, was held simultaneously at the meetups in Bangalore and Chennai on November 14, 2010. Wikipedians in Delhi also held a meetup the same day.

    The Malayalam Misplaced Pages held several academies in different parts of Kerala over the past few months.

    Wikimedia Foundation board member Bishakha Datta and Indian Wikipedian Srinivas Gunta co-authored a panel presentation at Wikimania 2010 on the Wikimedia Asia Project.

    WikiProject India Tag & Assess 2012 Contest

    Hello friends, we are a number of editors from WikiProject India have got together to assess the many thousands of articles under the stewardship of the project, and we'd love to have you, a fellow member, join us.
