::Yes, he will be former eventually but the point of removing free agent is that we don't ''have'' to update it later. For example, if Wes Martin just stayed at "American professional football guard" forever, that wouldn't even be technically wrong. Readers don't notice whether it says former or not. If it explicity says "free agent" when he hasn't played in years though, then readers actually do notice that.
I just want to let you know that Dwight Howard was just traded on June 20, 2018 to the Brooklyn Nets. He was traded in exchange for Timofey Mozgov, the 45th pick of the 2018 NBA Draft, and a 2021 second round pick. This is some new information that can be added, so there really isn't anything to change. You could also change the heading "Charlotte Hornets (2017-present)" to (2017-2018). You could also create a new heading with the previous info, Brooklyn Nets (2018-present).
