== Point La Vista Cape (Jacksonville) - Newly Published Starter Article ==
Dear Cuchullain: | |||
By way of introduction, I've written and recently had published in Misplaced Pages an article on the Cape of Point La Vista, Jacksonville. I am seeking to have it inserted in the Misplaced Pages article about Jacksonville Florida, which breaks out the neighborhoods. It is now considered just part of "Southside", somewhere between San Marco (which overlaps on the cape) and Mandarin. It is one of the most geographically distinct neighborhoods ( a cape)
and has a solidly documented history from Timucua, British Era, Colonial Second Spanish, Antebellum and Modern Times. So if you have an interest in helping me insert the article, please let me know.

We now have a new editor ] who does not want to follow these guides but instead use the US and UK guidelines and has renamed three stations to ], ] and ] which no longer follow the guidelines without seeking any consensus on this. As a result templates such as ] will no longer work on the New South Wales one and I suspect the same thing on other states. I have not been able to revert these changes. What should be done about this? ] (]) 03:52, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
:{{u|Fleet Lists}}, I'm not sure what there is to do as the guideline was never adopted. There's certainly a good case that the parenthetical disambiguation are more common, which is why they were used in the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland. Maybe it's time to start a new discussion. Personally I think Australia and New Zealand will need different guidelines as their slates of articles are different.--] ]/] 21:12, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

== Opechancanough, not Opchanacanough ==
This is a weird one. I was working on some Algonquian and noticed an issue here. It seems that years ago somebody added a fallacious spelling Opchanacanough that doesn't appear in any of the documents I've found or in any books prior to the mid-2000s. Nobody checked it and now it shows up in more recent books using WP as a source! It also somehow became the article title but I can't find the move request though. Perhaps the article was created with the misspelling. (It's particularly egregious because the first n was probably only a phonetic spread before -an: the word for "soul" was cehcak in a:pe-cehcak-en-o:w "white-soul-it-he = He Whose Soul Is White".)
Anyhow, this should probably be moved and I've posted on the talk page about it.

The change broke 1298 links. That is over 30% of the 4191 bad links to DAB pages reported by ]. ] (]) 10:48, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
:{{u|Narky Blert}}: Oh, I certainly didn't forget. A second move request to move ] to ] was started almost immediately after I closed the Chimpanzee RM, which if successful would moot much link fixing efforts. The fact is that the links were broken whether this landing page was consider a disambiguation page or a (rather useless) set index. In fact, many if not most of the links were already broken, as they intended the common chimpanzee rather than the genus Pan. :::The set index was causing some confusion in the RM, and it colored !votes in at least 2 cases already. It's also not really an SIA candidate, as there aren't multiple items that share a name, it's 3-4 separate uses of the same name. The only advantage of an SIA here is that it doesn't formally show up as creating broken links, even though the links are in fact broken.--] ]/] 13:45, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
::::Moving the dab page to the base name was not part of the move request. Why was it done? Also, how can you say "better to wait to see how the RM shakes out before devoting a lot of time and energy to fixing dab links"? If the links were intended for the genus ''Pan'', aren't they all broken (wrong) now regardless of the outcome of the second RM? Or are you saying that it almost doesn't matter whether the links point to the species or the genus since few are likely to be wrong in either case? ] (]) 14:07, 24 January 2019 (UTC)
:::::I put the dab page there because it's the only possible outcome of that move. With the article moving to ], and no consensus (at that time) that the common chimp should go to the base name, there's no choice but a dab page. As for the broken links, not quite: after looking at 50 or so, many if not most actually intended the common chimp specifically rather than the genus, and as such were already broken. This is something that would need to be corrected, but there's no point in changing links to ] now if that article is about to be moved, which looks likely so far.--] ]/] 14:24, 24 January 2019 (UTC)

Hi! | |||
You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.
When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.
Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin '''will still be able to access the IP'''. Of the eighteen editors participating in that discussion, less than one third expressly supported disambiguation of this titl (and even for the few who did, Jts1882 said that the title "should ''either'' be a disambiguation page ''or'' redirect to common chimpanzee" emphasis added). A substantially higher proportion of participants endorsed either moving ] to ], or redirecting the latter to the former. Creating a disambiguation page at a title with thousands of incoming links should not be done without clear consensus for the creation of a disambiguation at that title, and generally not without informing the experts in this area at the disambiguation project of the proposal for disambiguation. I would therefore ask that you revert that aspect of the close, so that either the broader consensus for a redirect of the title to ] is implemented, or the default redirect to the moved title is restored. There needs to be a separate discussion to establish a consensus to disambiguate the page. Cheers! ] ] 17:04, 9 February 2019 (UTC)
:I get where you're coming from, but I disagree, so I won't be reversing my call. Considering that the consensus was that the name was ambiguous, the standard solution is a dab page at the ambiguous name. We don't need to be so wonkish as to require that an editor must have made explicit reference to the dab page in arguing that the names are ambiguous, although many of them did. At any rate, I think it was the right and indeed only call. Leaving ] as a redirect to ] would have been against the consensus of participants, most of whom either said the names were ambiguous, or that ] is the primary topic. That point is further proven by the fact that most incoming links, many corrected by you, were not for the genus.--] ]/] 15:47, 11 February 2019 (UTC)
:: Most participants in that discussion said that ] is the primary topic, period, whether as a redirect target or as a page to be moved. In any case, even if there is no primary topic between the related topics (genus/species), the solution would have been to create a broad concept article explaining the difference between them (the only other topic on the page being a relatively obscure film). Instead, we are left with a situation which may take months or years to resolve to the position actually taken by a majority in the discussion. I only ask that the move of the disambiguation page be undone so that a specific discussion can be had on this point. ] ] 16:19, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

::: Strictly speaking, either the person who proposed the page move in the first place, or the handful who did propose moving the disambiguation page, should have notified the necessary parties. The point is that someone should have. If the discussion participants drop the ball on this with respect to moves with momentous impact on the disambiguation project, our best practice as administrators is to catch that. Besides, what harm could come from revisiting the discussion with broader community participation? It's not as though we're trying to force through a result by keeping potential participants in the dark, is it? ] ] 19:41, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

The move from shuffle dance to Melbourne Shuffle has been discussed, it's been 8 days and the consensus was to move. You moved it from the commonname page to the "shuffle dance" something completely made up, that no one has ever even heard of and none of the citations mentioned at all, without anything more than a POV rational. Why can't I move the bloody page now? Are you just being difficult for fun? There's no guideline I can see that says I can't just move the page, nothing about uninvolved ediors, infact quite the opposite, the way i read it I am supposed to follow through on my request after 7 days!?!?!?!...it's not a contentious move, there has been 100% support for the move in the discussion. If you csn't explain specifically and clearly why I can't follow the bloody guidelines and move the bloody page based on a consensus, then I'm going to move and report you for edit warring if you move it back again, you seem to be behaving in a very, very unreasonable manner to me ] (]) 04:20, 23 March 2019 (UTC)

I can't find any reference on who Richard M. Swiderski is. Who is he? A lot of the Knanya article is written on the basis of his 'Blood weddings' book which is not peer review. I don't believe your close fairly applied ] policy. You quoted a section of ] ({{tq|When there are multiple names for a subject, all of which are fairly common, and the most common has problems, it is perfectly reasonable to choose one of the others}}), but in this case, all verifiable evidence given by Oppose voters (as well as acknowledged by some Support voters) points to "chairperson" as being an incredibly ''uncommon'' term - even in reference ''only'' to women. It is not a valid part of the set of options which should be considered under that policy. I believe you have not weighed Oppose voters citing ]/] more heavily than those voting only on the basis of ]. Its well-established that when there is a conflict, policy trumps guidelines, and votes should be weighed with that in mind, not simply counted per ]. Lastly, I believe your "approximately 2/3 of the participants here favored a move" doesn't account for some supports that clearly preferred a move to "Chair (something)". This close should be marked as "No consensus". -- ] ] 23:48, 15 May 2019 (UTC)

::{{u|Netoholic}} and {{u|Bradv}}: Netoholic, I understand where you're coming from, but I don't agree. Chairperson is in "fairly common" use as was shown. I did give weight to those opposers citing COMMONNAME, but as I said I also considered what the policy says about instances where the most common option has problems. I didn't do a straight headcount of voters, but I didn't include those who preferred "Chair (disambiguation)" to the exclusion of "Chairperson". At any rate, I found the arguments in favor of a move to be stronger.--] ]/] 14:52, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

::::Something that gets millions of returns in searches of the sources can be described as "fairly common", even if it's not the most common.--] ]/] 16:13, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
::Cuchullain, as you know you're an admin I greatly respect, which is why I'm surprised and disappointed to see you toss Misplaced Pages RM policy aside on this one. Your assertion that chairperson is in fairly common use was not proven at the RM, in facy it was the opposite, the evidence presented clearly showed it to be the least common of the options and basically a niche term. I thought I had made that point at the RM but perhaps I didn't make it clearly enough. If you felt the arguments in favour of moving to a gender-neutral term were sufficient to see consensus for a move, then the *only* available target for that move was ], which was specifically recommended by many of those in opposition. I would urge you please to reconsider, and either move to Chair (officer) or declare ni overall consensus. The present title barely ticks any of the ]. Thanks. — ] (]) 15:16, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
:::Hi {{u|Amakuru}}. I think if anything is clear here, it's that a decisive majority of participants disfavor the former title of "chairman" and there are solid grounds for that based, based on both Misplaced Pages practice and real world experience. As such, I believe this qualifies as one of the exceptions that COMMONNAME mentions to its general guidance on selecting the most common name of all. I think there's a strong argument for "chair (disambiguation)", and that the article will likely end up at some title like that in the future, but I just don't think the consensus was there for it in the present discussion (That's natural considering the request was for "chairperson"). So I'm not comfortable moving to that title based on the discussion as we have it. It sucks to have to go through the ringer again, but I'd rather the "chair" issue be settled in its own dedicated RM. I considered recommending that we move directly to that now, but as we saw so many !votes where people opposed based on the short amount of time from the previous RM, I don't think that's wise.--] ]/] 16:13, 16 May 2019 (UTC)
::::Alright, thanks for your response. I guess we'll see about moving to a "Chair" variant in six months' time then. Cheers — ] (]) 16:25, 16 May 2019 (UTC)

The page histories reflect the regular disputes about the title, which are apparent from the to Chairman in April 2003, by {{u|Deb}}: "In order to avoid sexist assumptions, the position is nowadays more often called '''chairperson''' or simply the '''chair'''." Because this kind of issue has become an important part of Misplaced Pages's history, it would be good to make sure everything is undeleted and listed on ]. Administrators' newsletter – March 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2021).
Interface administrator changes
- A request for comment is open that proposes a process for the community to revoke administrative permissions. This follows a 2019 RfC in favor of creating one such a policy.
- A request for comment is in progress to remove F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a, which covers immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
- A request for comment seeks to grant page movers the
delete-redirect
userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target. The full proposal is at Misplaced Pages:Page mover/delete-redirect. - A request for comment asks if sysops may
place the General sanctions/Coronavirus disease 2019 editnotice template on pages in scope that do not have page-specific sanctions
? - There is a discussion in progress concerning automatic protection of each day's featured article with Pending Changes protection.
- When blocking an IPv6 address with Twinkle, there is now a checkbox with the option to just block the /64 range. When doing so, you can still leave a block template on the initial, single IP address' talkpage.
- When protecting a page with Twinkle, you can now add a note if doing so was in response to a request at WP:RfPP, and even link to the specific revision.
- There have been a number of reported issues with Pending Changes. Most problems setting protection appear to have been resolved (phab:T273317) but other issues with autoaccepting edits persist (phab:T275322).
- By motion, the discretionary sanctions originally authorized under the GamerGate case are now authorized under a new Gender and sexuality case, with sanctions
authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, any gender-related dispute or controversy and associated people.
Sanctions issued under GamerGate are now considered Gender and sexuality sanctions. - The Kurds and Kurdistan case was closed, authorizing standard discretionary sanctions for
the topics of Kurds and Kurdistan, broadly construed
.
- By motion, the discretionary sanctions originally authorized under the GamerGate case are now authorized under a new Gender and sexuality case, with sanctions
- Following the 2021 Steward Elections, the following editors have been appointed as stewards: AmandaNP, Operator873, Stanglavine, Teles, and Wiki13.

- Following a request for comment, F7 (invalid fair-use claim) subcriterion a has been deprecated; it covered immediate deletion of non-free media with invalid fair-use tags.
- Following a request for comment, page movers were granted the
delete-redirect
userright, which allows moving a page over a single-revision redirect, regardless of that redirect's target.
- When you move a page that many editors have on their watchlist the history can be split and it might also not be possible to move it again for a while. This is because of a job queue problem. (T278350)
- Code to support some very old web browsers is being removed. This could cause issues in those browsers. (T277803)
- A community consultation on the Arbitration Committee discretionary sanctions procedure is open until April 25.

Point La Vista Cape (Jacksonville) - Newly Published Starter Article
Dear Cuchullain: By way of introduction, I've written and recently had published in Misplaced Pages an article on the Cape of Point La Vista, Jacksonville. I am seeking to have it inserted in the Misplaced Pages article about Jacksonville Florida, which breaks out the neighborhoods. It is now considered just part of "Southside", somewhere between San Marco (which overlaps on the cape) and Mandarin. It is one of the most geographically distinct neighborhoods ( a cape) and has a solidly documented history from Timucua, British Era, Colonial Second Spanish, Antebellum and Modern Times. So if you have an interest in helping me insert the article, please let me know. PointLaVista (talk) 15:51, 5 April 2021 (UTC)Point La Vista
Misplaced Pages:Naming conventions (Australian and New Zealand stations)
A few years ago you assisted in the drafting of these guidelines which appear have never been formalised. We now have a new editor User talk:053pvr who does not want to follow these guides but instead use the US and UK guidelines and has renamed three stations to Hamilton railway station (New South Wales), Hamilton railway station (Victoria) and Hamilton railway station (New Zealand) which no longer follow the guidelines without seeking any consensus on this. As a result templates such as Template:rwsa will no longer work on the New South Wales one and I suspect the same thing on other states. I have not been able to revert these changes. What should be done about this? Fleet Lists (talk) 03:52, 14 April 2021 (UTC)
- Fleet Lists, I'm not sure what there is to do as the guideline was never adopted. There's certainly a good case that the parenthetical disambiguation are more common, which is why they were used in the US, Canada, the UK and Ireland. Maybe it's time to start a new discussion. Personally I think Australia and New Zealand will need different guidelines as their slates of articles are different.--Cúchullain /c 21:12, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Opechancanough, not Opchanacanough
TheLateDentarthurdent (talk) 14:56, 26 May 2021 (UTC)

- Consensus was reached to deprecate Misplaced Pages:Editor assistance.
- Following a Request for Comment the Book namespace was deprecated.
- Wikimedia previously used the IRC network Freenode. However, due to changes over who controlled the network with reports of a forceful takeover by several ex-staff members, the Wikimedia IRC Group Contacts decided to move to the new Libera Chat network. It has been reported that Wikimedia related channels on Freenode have been forcibly taken over if they pointed members to Libera. There is a migration guide and Wikimedia discussions about this.
- After a Clarification request, the Arbitration Committee modified Remedy 5 of the Antisemitism in Poland case. This means sourcing expectations are a discretionary sanction instead of being present on all articles. It also details using the talk page or the Reliable Sources Noticeboard to discuss disputed sources.

- Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
- An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.
- IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
- The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.

- Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.
- DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.
- A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
- Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
- The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

- Following consensus at the 2021 RfA review, the autopatrolled user right has been removed from the administrators user group; admins can grant themselves the autopatrolled permission if they wish to remain autopatrolled.
- Additionally, consensus for proposal 6C of the 2021 RfA review has led to the creation of an administrative action review process. The purpose of this process will be to review individual administrator actions and individual actions taken by users holding advanced permissions.
- Following the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Cabayi, Donald Albury, Enterprisey, Izno, Opabinia regalis, Worm That Turned, Wugapodes.
- The functionaries email list (functionaries-enlists.wikimedia.org) will no longer accept incoming emails apart from those sent by list members and WMF staff. Private concerns, apart from those requiring oversight, should be directly sent to the Arbitration Committee.

How we will see unregistered users
Hi!
You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.
If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.
We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.
Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Hi. In 2006, you created Magadoxa as a redirect to Essaouira. I have changed the target to Mogadishu, that being the target of Magadoxo, as well as the location suggested by the maps below:
- Magadoxa and P. Dell Gada
- P. Dell Gada and the Horn of Africa
If you have reason to believe Essaouira is also an appropriate target, you may wish to change the redirect to a disambiguation. —AlphaMikeOmega

Spin-off
Hello there, Cuchullain. In regards to this, do you really think spinoff
is a better spelling than spin-off
? I personally have seen the latter spelling used more often, plus the WP article for spin-off (media) is also titled that way, so I believe that that is the more commonly used spelling. InfiniteNexus (talk) 04:04, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
- I think they're both fine - they're both clearly in use - and there's no reason to change from one to the other as long as its consistent. In this case the article had used "spinoff" but over time someone changed one or two of the uses to "spin-off" but not the others, which is why I changed them back.--Cúchullain /c 15:26, 19 January 2022 (UTC)
Someone changed one or two of the uses to "spin-off" but not the others
, yes, which is why I find-and-replaced all instances of "spinoff" to "spin-off" in the edit that you reverted. InfiniteNexus (talk) 03:36, 20 January 2022 (UTC)

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Misplaced Pages arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.
If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}}

Proposed deletion of G-Spot (disambiguation)
The article G-Spot (disambiguation) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Disambiguation page not required (WP:ONEOTHER). Primary topic article has a hatnote to the only other use.
While all constructive contributions to Misplaced Pages are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 17:48, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Image categories
Considering out past involvement in articles relating to Aberdyfi and the local area in Wales, I have come across the Aberdyfi category for images on Wikimedia Commons which is currently branded as being too crowded. I would like to ask how many images should ideally be in a category. Although the category in question is on Commons, I am asking here because I expect there is a similar preference on Misplaced Pages. At the time of writing this, there were 911 files in the Aberdyfi category, many of which were uploaded by bots without placing them into any subcategories. In response to this issue, I have created some new subcategories but it would be time-consuming to move all of the appropriate images manually.Tk420 (talk) 22:17, 2 January 2025 (UTC)
