Dear Authors,
== ] ==

I hope this message finds you well. I am reaching out to invite your expertise and collaboration in improving the quality and accuracy of the Misplaced Pages article draft on '''Don Bosco College, Panjim'''. As experts and contributors in this field, your insights and contributions would be invaluable in ensuring that the information presented is comprehensive, accurate, and up-to-date.
Would someone from WP:UNI mind taking a look at this article? There are some minor things which can be cleaned up fairly easily (e.g. ], ], ]), but the main thing is that the article seems to be citing ] as its only source. Actually, it's not really citing the German Misplaced Pages article about the school per se, but rather the sources cited in the German Misplaced Pages article, but the way it's doing this is not how it should be done. In addition, it might be a translation of the German Misplaced Pages article which would require attribuition per ]. -- ] (]) 06:01, 7 August 2019 (UTC)
: I've moved the article to ], a user was trying to create a new article for the renamed institution, and cleared up a few of the issues. Someone still needs to look at the attribution issue ] (]) 19:17, 15 August 2019 (UTC)

We are particularly looking for improvements in the following areas:

# '''Notability''': Information and sources that demonstrate the college's significance and impact.

Improving the notability of the draft is crucial for its acceptance as a full Misplaced Pages article. Notability can be established through reliable secondary sources such as news articles, academic papers, and books that discuss the college in detail.

I've reopened an old can of worms and in the Talk page for the ] that, for some universities and colleges, it makes considerably more sense to feature a school's logo prominently rather than its seal or coat-of-arms. In some cases, a school's seal isn't used for any public recognition purposes at all, is only used for stamping diplomas and that sort of thing, and so it's strange for those schools to feature it so prominently on the page rather than a recognizable logo. == Is a university "affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention" a "Baptist university?" ==

Best regards,
I've opened a discussion at ] asking if a university "affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention" is a "Baptist university." Your input would be appreciated! ] (]) 18:29, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
:Please note there are several other colleges and universities in nearly identical situations e.g., ] is affiliated with the ] but does that make it "Lutheran" or is that an appropriate shorthand description? ] (]) 22:02, 23 August 2019 (UTC)
::Honestly the larger issue of that descriptor seems like a case-by-case kinda thing (dependent on the nature of the affiliation in relation to financing, curriculum, or culture). Quick search for "Baptist" in shows that a fair degree of control is held by ] (provides the funds, and controls its charter through the appointment of the University's trustees), so I don't see anything wrong with calling it a baptist institution. In saying that though, I also don't see anything wrong with how the lead is presently worded (its a private university.... Anderson is affiliated with baptist convention...). ] (]) 04:11, 24 August 2019 (UTC)
:: As I mentioned on the Anderson talk page, to me "affiliated" has the meaning of a voluntary association, which would not include (in this example) a university funded and controlled by the convention (via the appointment of its trustees) – in corporate terms, the SC Baptist Convention is the ] of the university. It struck me last night that this could be a US English usage of "affiliated", in which case we should follow ] and "use a commonly understood word or phrase in preference to one that has a different meaning because of national differences" on Misplaced Pages. ] (]) 15:22, 24 August 2019 (UTC)

== /* Top rankings */ in page College and university Rankings ==

----
Hi, I would like some help from other editors; one user some time ago decided that the ] page was too messed up with over 20 rankings listed up together, making no distinction of those virtually unknown and those well-established, well respected and that every country in the world cares about, as the ARWU Shanghai ranking, the QS ranking and the THE ranking. So the person made a new section about these three specific rankings before all others. Then another user showed up and added the "Leiden ranking" I had honestly never heard of (in years of dealing with education and rankings), in what is obviously a personal move, but as such user is a registered and active editor and I'm just an IP, I understand I'll need more people to seriously look into the issue for my opinion alone won't count much. I would therefore be quite grateful if somebody who is familiar with the topic could participate in its discussion page. Thank you. ] (]) 20:35, 3 October 2019 (UTC)

== Should ] recommend that country be included in the lede sentence? ==

There appears to be a growing consensus that "United States" should be included in the lede of articles about colleges and universities in that country. This appears to mirror the common practice of including the country in the lede sentence of articles about colleges and universities. Although we have had a few discussions about this specific topic, and , we do not seem to have ever reached consensus among ourselves. ] is silent on this issue.

Is it time to recognize that editors have independently come to a consensus on this issue and edit our advice article accordingly? (For the record, I would recommend adding this as a "should" clause in the advice, not a "must" as that kind of rigid prescription rarely works in Misplaced Pages.) ] (]) 16:38, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

:Pinging a few editors who seem to be particularly active in making relevant edits: {{ping|636Buster|p=}}, {{ping|Nikkimaria|p=}}. ] (]) 16:44, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
:As you could guess based on my contributions, I would be in favor of such a proposal. I adopted the view from ]'s approach (e.g., see first sentence of ] or ]). I don't like to assume that a reader of an article already knows a city is in the US even when disambiguated by listing the US state, although I recognize the view that they can get that information from the infobox or that city's own article. When the college or university is in a larger city that doesn't itself have disambiguation (e.g., ]), I think that having "United States" is less necessary, but I've moved to include it anyways for consistency across higher ed articles. ] (]) 17:11, 4 January 2025 (UTC)

::As per ], Misplaced Pages articles should be written for an international audience - including country is necessary context to "make article accessible and understandable for as many readers as possible". ] (]) 17:59, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
:In general, I think this is a good idea, but it is likely to throw up edge cases. Universities in Puerto Rico, for example, are in an unincorporated US territory but are not actually within the US and should not be described as being in the US, per ].
:British universities are normally referred to as being in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, per ]: "The top level frame of reference is the country within the UK (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales)".
:There are bound to be others, these are just two I know well. I think this can be overcome with careful wording, maybe something like "the country should be included; the guidelines of the relevant local WikiProject should be followed in determining the best way to do this if there is any uncertainty." ] (]) 02:05, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
:It should go up to the smallest administrative division that is still globally recognizable. "New York City" needs nothing else; "Pasadena, California," is sufficient because California is globally recognizable. "Boise, Idaho, United States" needs the country because Idaho is not globally recognizable. Whether something is globally recognizable or not somewhat corresponds to its ] level ranking, but I think it'd be hard to systematize. <span style="border:3px outset;border-radius:8pt 0;padding:1px 5px;background:linear-gradient(6rad,#86c,#2b9)">]</span> ] 18:50, 5 January 2025 (UTC)

Things To Do
  1. Work on articles that need cleanup.
  2. Create a page for every university and college and add {{infobox University}} for it. See the missing list for those institutions still awaiting articles.
  3. Place {{WikiProject Higher education}} on every related talk page.
  4. Combat boosterism wherever it appears
  5. Ensure all articles, including Featured articles, are consistent with the article guidelines.

While some of the requests may have merit (the SUNY schools for example) two dozen cookie-cutter requests seems disruptive. ~~ Jessintime (talk) 18:32, 22 December 2024 (UTC)

Recommend keeping full name per name used in main article. IMHO, full names makes for better translations and easier to understand for international users. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 16:32, 31 December 2024 (UTC)

Should Misplaced Pages:College and university article advice recommend that country be included in the lede sentence?

There appears to be a growing consensus that "United States" should be included in the lede of articles about colleges and universities in that country. This appears to mirror the common practice of including the country in the lede sentence of articles about colleges and universities. Although we have had a few discussions about this specific topic, one in 2009 and one in 2022, we do not seem to have ever reached consensus among ourselves. Misplaced Pages:College and university article advice is silent on this issue.

Is it time to recognize that editors have independently come to a consensus on this issue and edit our advice article accordingly? (For the record, I would recommend adding this as a "should" clause in the advice, not a "must" as that kind of rigid prescription rarely works in Misplaced Pages.) Pinging a few editors who seem to be particularly active in making relevant edits: @636Buster, @Nikkimaria. ElKevbo (talk) 16:44, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
As you could guess based on my contributions, I would be in favor of such a proposal. I adopted the view from WP:CITY's approach (e.g., see first sentence of El Paso, Texas or Pittsburgh). I don't like to assume that a reader of an article already knows a city is in the US even when disambiguated by listing the US state, although I recognize the view that they can get that information from the infobox or that city's own article. When the college or university is in a larger city that doesn't itself have disambiguation (e.g., University of Pittsburgh), I think that having "United States" is less necessary, but I've moved to include it anyways for consistency across higher ed articles. 636Buster (talk) 17:11, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
As per WP:AUDIENCE, Misplaced Pages articles should be written for an international audience - including country is necessary context to "make article accessible and understandable for as many readers as possible". Nikkimaria (talk) 17:59, 4 January 2025 (UTC)
In general, I think this is a good idea, but it is likely to throw up edge cases. Universities in Puerto Rico, for example, are in an unincorporated US territory but are not actually within the US and should not be described as being in the US, per WP:PRUS.
British universities are normally referred to as being in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, per WP:UKGUIDE: "The top level frame of reference is the country within the UK (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales)".
There are bound to be others, these are just two I know well. I think this can be overcome with careful wording, maybe something like "the country should be included; the guidelines of the relevant local WikiProject should be followed in determining the best way to do this if there is any uncertainty." It should go up to the smallest administrative division that is still globally recognizable. "New York City" needs nothing else; "Pasadena, California," is sufficient because California is globally recognizable. "Boise, Idaho, United States" needs the country because Idaho is not globally recognizable. Whether something is globally recognizable or not somewhat corresponds to its WP:VA level ranking, but I think it'd be hard to systematize. Sdkb18:50, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
(Note: I'm talking just about the first sentence of the lead prose. In the infobox, flow is less important and comprehensivity more so, so I'd favor the country there.) Sdkb18:53, 5 January 2025 (UTC)
