The World Chess Championship 2022/23 will be a chess match for the World Chess Championship . The match will be between a champion, who will be the winner of the World Chess Championship 2021 between Magnus Carlsen and Ian Nepomniachtchi ; and a challenger, who will be the winner of the 2022 Candidates Tournament .
FIDE announced the 2022 Candidates Tournament in May 2021. No date for the championship match was given, but it led to speculation that the championship match would also be in 2022.
