Windows 11 is an upcoming release of the Windows NT operating system developed by Microsoft. It will be the successor to Windows 10.

Development

Announcement

At the Microsoft Build 2021 developer conference, CEO Satya Nadella teased the next generation of Windows during his keynote. According to Nadella, he had been self-hosting it for several months. He also teased an official announcement very soon.

Just a week after Nadella's keynote, Microsoft started sending invites for a dedicated Windows event. The event will start at 11 AM ET on June 24.

Microsoft teased the next generation of Windows as being Windows 11 by posting an 11-minute Windows startup sound video to YouTube on June 10. The event starts at 11 AM, which is an unusual time for a Microsoft event. Many believed it also being a hint.

On June 15, 2021, a beta build of Windows 11 was leaked online, which shows a very similar interface to the cancelled Windows 10X.

Features

User interface

Windows 11 features an updated user interface which follows Microsoft's Fluent Design guidelines. Features of the new UI include centered taskbar, new start menu, and refreshed system icons.
