Soviet Russia (Template:Lang-ru; transliteration: ''Sovietskaya Russya) was a conventional name for the country that is now the Russian Federation (Russia) from 1917-91, when the government was controlled by the Bolshevik Party and its many successors.

History

The state governed by the Bolsheviks, and later the Communist Party, was established on 18 November 1917 after the Russian Provisional Government (the ruling party of the Russian Republic) was overthrown in the October Revolution. It existed without an official name until January 25, 1918 when the 3rd All-Russian Congress of Soviets adopted the name Soviet Russian Republic. On July 19, 1918 the adoption of the Russian Constitution of 1918 renamed the state Russian Socialist Federative Soviet Republic. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was formed on December 30, 1922 with the incorporaton of Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, and Trancaucasia into a a federation- "Soviet Russia" thereafter referred to Russia as one of the many republics within the Soviet Union. The final name change, to Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, which was the name of the state until the dissolution of the Soviet Union occurred upon the adoption of the Soviet Constitution of 1936.
