Searchlight magazine describes itself as an "international anti-Fascist magazine", and publishes material critical of what it perceives to be far-right political parties worldwide. It is edited by Gerry Gable, a former member of the Communist Party of Great Britain and militant far left '62 Group' and adopts a very left-wing stance on most issues.
Searchlight has consistently published exposes of the National Front and the British National Party and their members, which have been heavily criticised by some who claim such articles were attempts to encourage physical attacks on the individuals concerned.
Searchlight has also written about organizations such as Combat 18 and the neo-nazi music scene.
Searchlight has been controversial on both the right and the left of the British political spectrum. Many organisations such as Anti-Fascist Action refuse to work with it due to its alleged links with the British security forces. It has been sued by a plethora of organisations on many occasions, often successfully.
