In naval architecture, a poop deck is a deck that constitutes the roof of a poop cabin built in the aft (rear) part of the superstructure of a ship. It is meant to be a vantage point for the captain or other officers, as the entire ship is often visible from this spot. The name originates from its original purpose, keeping excess seawater (also known as "poop") off the aft of the ship.
