Gerard James Butler (born November 13, 1969) is a Scottish actor.
Born in Glasgow, the youngest of three children, he spent the first few years of his life in Toronto before returning to Paisley, Scotland after his father left the family. He studied law at Glasgow University, where he served as President of the school's Law Society, and worked as a solicitor after graduation, but decided to quit his job in order to study acting. He spent the majority of his time as a lawyer feeling depressed and drinking, but he sobered up after he started acting and has not touched a drop of alcohol for over 8 years. He resides primarily in London, although he recently purchased a loft apartment in New York City.
