"Wonderland" is a song by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift from the deluxe version of her fifth studio album, 1989 (2014). Swift wrote "Wonderland" alongside Swedish record producers Max Martin and Shellback who both produced the song as well. "Wonderland" was released on CD on October 27, 2014, and for digital download on iTunes on February 17, 2015. "Wonderland", as well as the rest of the deluxe tracks became available for streaming on Apple Music and Spotify on June 30, 2015, and June 9, 2017; respectively.

Music and lyrics

Musically, "Wonderland" is a powerful electropop song with elements of dance-pop, indietronica, and features piano, programmed drums, synthesizers, and bass drops. "Wonderland" is in the key E♭ major, and Swift's vocals range from E♭3 to B♭4.

Lyrically, "Wonderland" is based off Alice in Wonderland. The song tells the story of a short-lives couple inadvertently "getting lost in Wonderland". The pre-chorus describes the narrator's uncertainty of the relationship: "Didn't they tell us "Don't rush into things?" / "Haven't you heard what becomes of curious minds?" The chorus then highlights: "We found Wonderland, you and I got lost in it / And we pretended it could last forever". However, the couple starts to face difficulties with each other: "So we went on our way / Too in love to think straight / All alone or so it seemed". In the bridge, the narrator tries to reach for the muse but finds out they had left, and ultimately both parties "went mad": "You searched the world for something else to make you feel like what we had / And in the end, in Wonderland, we both went mad".

The lyrics of "Wonderland" also contain references to the original story of Alice in Wonderland. The lyrics: "You held on tight to me / 'Cause nothing's as it seems" alludes to the ever-changing absurdities faced by Alice in the original film. The lyric: "Didn't you calm my fears with a Cheshire Cat smile?" directly refers to the character, the Cheshire Cat.

Release and commercial performance

"Wonderland" was officially released on October 27, 2014 under Big Machine Records on the deluxe version of the album 1989. However, it was originally only available on CD, which was available exclusively at Target. On February 17, 2015, Swift announced on Twitter that "Wonderland" would be available for digital download on the iTunes Store immediately, and that the other two tracks exclusive to the deluxe edition of 1989—"You Are in Love" and "New Romantics"—would be available on iTunes soon.

"Wonderland" is the fourteenth track on the deluxe edition of 1989 and is the first of three deluxe tracks. "Wonderland" debuted and peaked at 51 on the US Billboard Hot 100.
