Thanks! I try and take photos of any interesting cars I see around; fortunately Orange County, California is one of the car-enthusiast centers of the world. The Donut Derelicts cruise-in every Saturday morning brings about 300 cars or so every week, and there's at least one unusual one every time. And no entrance fees, no contests, no prizes, pretty much no organization whatsoever; just a few guys 15 or so years ago deciding to meet at a donut shop every Saturday morning in their old cars, and it grew. That's probably the largest grassroots car show in the world.

Do you look through the windshield of the car in front of you, when driving?

I lived in LA from 1969-90. The trick of driving by looking through the windshield of the car in front of you is a device that I am not alone in. I cannot speak for Orange County, but in LA, and driving up the 405 on a good day, everyone drives as efficiently as possible, including commutes from Ventura county, (which I last drove in Feb 2004 5AM, 75MPH). If you drive this way (by looking through the windshield of the car in front of you), you have got to be tailgating, which is how everyone drove in my memory. It used to be true that traffic in LA was sparse enough that Orange County was 20 minutes away. As I understand it, today, that number has gone up to several hours, if you choose the wrong time of day. The way to change lanes at 65 MPH is to focus on the corner of the car that you want to follow after you have changed lanes. Thus you can be only a few feet away from that car as you change lanes at 65MPH. We learned these tricks by moving to LA as newlyweds with a nice car (66 Mustang), later traded for an air conditioner. My wife's parents still live in the Valley, which is why we still get back there.

When we first moved, the streets were nice, too, but the smog was very bad. Apparently the situation has reversed. It was 1970 before we could see the Santa Monica mountains.

I learned about the concept flow of traffic in 1983 from my boss. But we had been driving that way anyway, learning the situation implicitly.

But if traffic is so bad that you can't travel at freeway speeds anymore, perhaps in Orange County, then I would be interested in hearing that. Ancheta Wis 11:05, 20 Sep 2004 (UTC)

RN ships

The secret of authoritative RN ship info is Colledge's Ships of the Royal Navy, cheaply available from online booksellers. It's basically a giant database dump, almost no textual info, but has the advantage of being based on original archive research. A sobering reminder of how much of the world's knowledge has yet to appear online anywhere... Stan 00:23, 21 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the encouragement

Hi. Spotted your talkback soon after adding a few links. I had read the editing tutorial, but the others were new to me. After a bit more reading, I've done some more updating, and started a new page for Wisconsin Central (both Railway and Transportation Company). There are several other railroad-related subjects that I notice are missing, so I'll be adding them as I have time. I've also got to add onto my personal page, but that's another story. Anyway, thanks for the pointers. slambo 19:06, 22 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Hello Fellow Oriental Lover

It is nice to meet you. Until I owned one, I was not aware how much like children OSH can be. I just fell in love with the breed. Here is my website: http://home.comcast.net/~cats_rule/ I am running my cat Gavin for a regional win this year. Wish me luck. Wishing many blessings to you and Loki.

Hello Fellow Oriental Lover (reply)

I know what you mean about them making you smile and laugh. Mine do something goofy every day. Of course, you can't let them think you are laughing at them or they will get their feelings hurt. Trey is goofy and clumsy and for the most part oblivious of everything, but a total love. He sleeps very close to me and is the most connected to me spiritually. Gavin is my sweetness pie. He is a more dignified cat and gets offended more easily. He is very affectionate too and if you rub his belly, he HAS to lick you (usually he goes for the face). Gavin is a one show grand and the only blue and white bicolor that I have seen (although I am sure there must be others).

I very much like the CasaDecano cats. I have never met Pat Decano, but really like what I have seen from her cattery. My cats have very hard bodies, but I am working on the earset. Their heads and earsets are fine for granding, but I am a perfectionist. I am also wanting to breed out the color around the nose and mouth. It creates an optical illusion that makes the cats look like they have shorter noses and weaker chins than they really do.

I have really rambled on. Sorry. I could talk forever about my cats. They are my children. Love to you and Loki from the Utau-Neko cats.

PRR loco types

Hey there, just spotted your page on PRR steam loco types. Way cool. EMD E2

Eleven minutes after I created EMD E2, Hoary voted to delete it as non-notable. With his comment about "a ginormous set of such articles", he might be gunning for the whole project. Please vote as you see fit. Rmeier 07:56, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Well, he -- I -- was vaguely thinking of doing so. (Whaddajerk!) Sorry, my mind must have been temporarily sollogized at the time I so listed it. I subsequently decided that I had been wrong. My apologies for having wasted your time. Now, since (i) the original plaintiff (?) (me) has decided that the article is worth keeping, (ii) not a single person has voted to delete it, and (iii) it has wide support, the continuation of a request for VfD seems a bit silly. Four days or so from now it will anyway reach a tally (no doubt a unanimous or near-unanimous "Keep!"), but I wonder if there's a way an administrator such as yourself can finish the VfD process early. If so, I'd be all in favour of it. -- Hoary 04:36, 2004 Dec 20 (UTC)

Multiple Unit

Did I address many of your concerns on Multiple unit? Cheers, Cecropia | explains it all ® 22:31, 24 Dec 2004 (UTC)

Definitely. There's a European impression that urban transit systems are a European innovation and that all Americans drive, which this should help dissolve.
There's still the multiple-unit operation of locomotives rather than trainsets to consider, done around the world. In US practice this is always referred to as 'MU'; I seem to recall a British use of 'multiple working' to refer to this. I'm not sure this should be totally in the same article; maybe it should refer to a separate one that discusses multiple working technologies in more depth? —Morven 00:45, Dec 25, 2004 (UTC)
The article was rather dismissive of American practice. I did start a separate article, Multiple-unit train control sometime back. Maybe that could be the core for a discussion of the technology. I also want to break out "trolley car" into a separate article. Not everything that can be said about the subject can be simply folded into tram. -- Cecropia | explains it all ® 04:07, 25 Dec 2004 (UTC)

PRR locomotive classification

I've seen many people add articles to categories in similar situations, using |* to make it the first element, for example (for which the leading space does the same thing as |*). Is this not supposed to be done? --SPUI 00:12, 28 Dec 2004 (UTC)

I find it less semantically useful and correct to do that; I think that such a category (a very specific category) is an 'is-a' relationship; members of the category are what the category name says it is. Instead, articles ABOUT the category should be referred to in the category's description and should point to the category (using ]]] instead.
It's not something that's been for-sure decided as a matter of Misplaced Pages policy, but I think it works better that way. —Morven 00:16, Dec 28, 2004 (UTC)
My bad for re-adding a category link on this page. I hereby submit to 20 lashes with a wet noodle. B-) slambo 16:52, Dec 28, 2004 (UTC)
Fair enough ;) It's a pet peeve of mine, but I think it comes down to how one views categories. Since I come from a programming background, I'm thinking of them as a multiple-inheritance object model, with an 'IS-A' relationship implied, but I think other people have different conceptions of what a category means ... —Morven 17:57, Dec 28, 2004 (UTC)

Template:Book reference

Well then. My sincere apologies. I am, in fact, willing to fix all references to that template in the near future to keep Template:Book reference and Template:Book reference 2 uniform. Thanks for reverting me, anyhow. ] 06:35, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Sounds like an admirable aim. Is there anywhere where what that consistency should be is being discussed? —Morven 07:52, Jan 5, 2005 (UTC)

Penn Central

Sorry about that - from a google search, it appeared it was the PC RR. What exactly was the corporate structure? http://www.pcrrhs.org/history.html indicates that the Penn Central Company was a holding company for the railroad company - what was the railroad company called? --SPUI 08:31, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hmmm, it appears it was Penn Central Transportation Company. Is that correct? --SPUI 08:32, 6 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Missing edits?

This could just be a lack of misunderstanding on my part, but a recent edit you made to the BMW Z1 page can't be tracked in the page's history. What's weirder is that my watchlist still mentions you as the last editor, despite a more recent edit that I made, which shows up on the page's history. This definitely looks like a database flub to me, but it looks like you've got a good deal more experience here than I do—anything ideas? Did I screw this up, or is it even limited to my viewing preferences? Thanks! --Milkmandan 09:03, 2005 Jan 6 (UTC)

Thanks for your quick response. The multi-tier database arrangement certainly explains it, and it looks like it has fixed itself. I guess I'm a bit more skittish about oddities like this after the recent upgrades. --Milkmandan 17:51, 2005 Jan 6 (UTC)

Engine sizes

Should we include cc too? I like to - it's important in identifying exact clone engines. Also, automakers like to lie about the liter size... I've been using "5.0 L (4930 cc)" in many articles. Color me crazy... --SFoskett 21:35, Sep 14, 2004 (UTC)

Yes, as a matter of fact, I do live in Anaheim. Born, lived and raised. Right near the 57 & 91 Fwys. I worked at Disneyland for 4 years while I was in HS. Now, I work right next to City Hall. Corner of Broadway and Anaheim Blvd.

Way cool. I've created Template:PRR steam types based on the data in it, but it's still pretty ugly in the way that the columns rendered (especially with so many classes with only one entry). Any ideas? I've got data on the SP's steam program, I'll see if I can get something similar put together for that road. slambo 21:35, Nov 10, 2004 (UTC)

Image:GT40.jpg

Hello. Why do you believe that Image:GT40.jpg is not available under a free license? The uploader has tagged it GFDL and I don't see any reason to think that isn't the case. SamH 11:02, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)

OK, the uploader has added the proper source info to the image description page and has confirmed that he took the photo. From my talk page:
"I took that picture in the Black Hawk auto museum. It, along with all the cars on display, is light in such a way as to give it a studio like look. Seano1"
I'll reintstate the image on the Ford GT40 article if you agree. SamH|Talk 23:09, 15 Jan 2005 (UTC).

Chinese steam engines

Hi. There are certainly traces of the Diffusion of technology from China to the West. The only source I know is the series of books by Joseph Needham. I don't have access. More probably he is picking it up from a kiddy web page some where. Several eminent economic historians are very careless indeed about the fact of the history of technology. There is one web page I found that stated that James Watt is mentioned in the Bible and it turned out to be one of these numerology pages where the letters were conjoined on a diagonal. :) Apwoolrich 09:21, 21 Jan 2005 (UTC)

New ship table template

I've spent the last few days working on a new ship table template to enable us to centralise the editing of things like weapons outfits for a particular class of ships in one template (so with the Fletchers or Gearings or other big classes you only have to edit in one place to alter a mistake rather than in dozens or hundreds). Please have a look at the WikiProject Ships page's talk section and see what you think. I haven't written the instructions for using it yet, and I want to see whether there are any table cells people would like me to include that aren't present yet. There are two example tables, one with all the optional cells present, and the other with some excluded. David Newton 14:06, 5 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Answering a really OLD question!

Hi! Long time, no talk. I wandered over to the article on Hearse and saw your question from last July regarding the availability of a Lincoln Town Car "hearse builder's package" on an Ford Excursion chassis complete with a Triton V10. That tempting combo was, in fact, listed on Ford's fleet sales site which is why I added it to the article (blew my mind, I can tell you), but it seems to have disappeared as of late. Too bad. What a car that would make! Order it as a 4x4 and you'd be set. Ah, fantasy. - Lucky 6.9 08:39, 26 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Convair B-36

Our article on the Convair B-36 has really impressed some people. A few days ago, an anon on my talk page said: "March 11 05 - Just discovered wikis recently. I'm hooked. As a B-36 fanatic, I'm grateful to see such a comprehensive article." I thought I should share that with you, because most of the information in the current article came from your efforts.

ALCO PA redirects

Hi! While working on the Wiki Syntax cleanup effort, I came across your three redirects at ALCO PA-1, ALCO PA-2 and ALCO PA-3, all pointing to ALCO PA, a (currently) non-existent article.

Usually, such redirects are candidates for speedy deletion, but since there's a lot of inter-linking between these and other ALCO articles, I was wondering if you could be persuaded to whip up a quick stub in lieu of ALCO PA?

Trains

Hi Morven, thanks for the invite. I am editing trains to the point that my knowledge is depleted and I am happy with the look, feel and standardisation of the top-level articles (right now, they are very messy). After these edit marathons, I'll probably move on to other topics. I'd really like to make a template on German steam locomotives, like the ones you and others made for American ones, but I don't have any specialist books (only Maerklin catalogues). Problem is that there are probably around 50-100 DB types, so dou you think they can be crammed into a template (with epoch divisions, which nearly triples the number). — Phlebas 13:37, 2 Apr 2005 (UTC)

On FM Copyvio

Sorry to bother you, but...

Sam did something really silly that potentially could have caused some trouble.

Your removal of his copyvio report was probably illegal (as in actually illegal illegal) and Sam does in fact have the option to sue. I've talked with him, and he's not quite THAT mean&stupid, fortunatately. :-) (that and I was fwapping him to remove the darn messages himself.)

In any case, just pointing out that removing copyvio messages like that is probably Not A Good Idea (tm).

Kim Bruning 23:10, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Hmm, well I suppose you're right to be angry at Sam. I was kind of hoping I could get him to see the light before someone caught him though ^^;; In the mean time I think claiming copyvio is rather nastier than a mere trick to "game the system", and I've told him so.
Sometimes people forget that there is a Real World with Real Rules out there. :-/
Anyway, sorry to have bothered you. Kim Bruning 23:23, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)
Hehehehehe! Sam may well rue the fact that he hadn't thought up a rather more creative flame. O:-) Thanks for your time once again :-) Kim Bruning 23:35, 4 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I am very aware of both the modest nature of the offense, as well as the real world nature of it. I find your removal of my request for clarification offensive and contrary to your duties as an administrator. I assume you are acting in an official capacity in this instance, and will be requesting clarification from the Designated agent. (Sam Spade | talk | contributions) 00:08, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Sam, quit digging your hole deeper. —Morven 00:10, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)

Why this hostility from you? Why the disrespect? What benefit do you see in either the linking to that email or the deletion of my request for action or advice regarding copyright problems? Wouldn't an explanation of policy have been more suitable? (Sam Spade | talk | contributions) 00:38, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

I have a particular dislike for people gaming the system, people trying to rules-lawyer their way into finding ways to be as obnoxious as possible through loopholes in the rules. I especially do not appreciate your disingenously pretending you didn't know exactly what you were trying to do.
On a longer email, I would advise User:FeloniousMonk to paraphrase, but one cannot paraphrase such a short communication very well, so I think quoting the whole thing is quite acceptable under Fair Use.
I also did not see any attempt, anywhere, to ask nicely for it to be removed, nor any attempt to apologise for sending such a petty personal attack through email simply to avoid the restrictions on personal attacks here. If such do in fact exist and I missed them, I myself apologise and would like to have them pointed out.
You are not, I believe, acting in good faith. That is the essence of my problem with you here. The benefit I see of linking to that email? Because it shows the way you behave on Misplaced Pages. Especially since you have not apologised, recanted or changed, to the best of my knowledge. This attempt to use copyright law to erase your history is pretty shameful. —Morven 00:54, Apr 5, 2005 (UTC)
I stumbled over this randomly, and IANAL, but I'd be shocked if a quote as short as "F*** you, you ignorant rat bastard" was not perfectly lawful to use freely in any country. — Matt Crypto 01:38, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

See this in answer to your question , and

this in response to Kim's advice. Your wrong about my faith, and wrong to violate policy by assuming bad faith on my part, and in covering up a copyvio rather than acting in good faith as an admin, but whatever, its not worth pressing the matter. (Sam Spade | talk | contributions) 08:59, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)
