While the phrase 'Transcendental Meditation' is clearly of his own invention, much controversy exists among researchers as to its actual origin. Mahesh Prasad Varma (Maharishi) has himself proclaimed the teaching to come from his ancient order, adding that his beloved master Guru Dev, on his deathbed, charged his favored disciple to bring the practice to the world. Nevertheless, one is hard pressed to find evidence of the actual practice, with its unique instructions for using the traditional mantra, in Vedantic teachings, or data to support the much-favored relationship he shared with the highly revered master. Some research has even suggested the technique to be Buddhist in origin. Inconsistencies also abound within the secretive realm of the movement where information uncovered by legal and professional researchers (ex. deprogrammers) reveal disagreements with the public platforms of the movement.
In 1957 he founded The Spiritual Regeneration Movement, the first of several organizations collectively known as the TM Movement, and began the first of many tours to teach the technique around the world. The Beatles were among his students.
Maharishi has written a number of books on Vedic wisdom and the Vedas as the science of consciousness. He uses modern technology to spread his teachings—he has created the Maharishi Open University as an online teaching outlet, holds a weekly video press conference, and uses satellite and the Internet for his Maharishi Broadcasting. He has also started numerous centers of Consciousness Based Education including the Maharishi University of Management and the Maharishi School for the Age of Enlightenment
Maharishi has also initiated a new type of currency, the RAAM.
