David Miscavige is the chairman of the Religious Technology Center, an organization that was founded by the Church of Scientology to control all of the copyrighted material authored by church founder L. Ron Hubbard. Although Religious Technology Center claims to be entirely distinct from the Church of Scientology, Miscavige—who, as a teenager, was one of Hubbard's assistants—is widely reported to have become the leader of the Church and all of the affiliated Scientology enterprises upon Hubbard's death in 1986, and he remains so today. He works out of Scientology's "Gold Base", formerly known as Gilman Hot Springs, a facility near Hemet, California.
