Looking for articles about "École allemande Humboldt" in newspapers in Quebec

{{resolved}} For Alexander von Humboldt German International School Montreal

Hello! I'm trying to find any historical newspaper articles that give in-depth coverage to the school (known as "École internationale allemande Alexander von Humboldt" in French) in Montreal. This is for a relevant articles for deletion on FRwiki. I noticed Montreal Gazette had archives on Newspapers.com but I havent found other archives of English newspapers.

Thanks, WhisperToMe (talk) 13:29, 28 October 2023 (UTC)

WhisperToMe, have you tried searching the Bibliothèque et Archives Nationales du Québec (BanQ)? They have pretty extensive archives over there. Szmenderowiecki (talk) 15:48, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
Not yet. Lemme see what I can find there today. Thank you for the tip! WhisperToMe (talk) 15:51, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
From my first search result I found a good primary source: an international agreement on the operations of the school. It's not the secondary sources that I had looked for, but it's compelling and would be a good further reading entry. WhisperToMe (talk) 19:57, 28 October 2023 (UTC)
WhisperToMe, what's the progress on this request? Szmenderowiecki (talk) 15:02, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
@Szmenderowiecki: The good news is that the FRwiki article survived its AFD due to other sources I found in English (and one in French). It's no longer critical to find these, though it may still be nice if a French speaking Wikipedian knew of additional resources and stumbled upon this request. WhisperToMe (talk) 20:16, 2 December 2023 (UTC)
Well I speak some French but I'm not based in Quebec so that's about everything I can offer.
You may try to look into archives of some Montreal newspapers, look here for possible candidates. Szmenderowiecki (talk) 13:12, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Here's what I find of relevance from searching Dow Jones Factiva for humboldt montreal german school; there are 413 results, so I did a lot of skimming/skipping, but I eventually got to the end of the list. Let me know if you'd like me to send you content from or provide additional information about any of this; I already have your email address in case anything is too long for me to be comfortable with posting it publicly.
  • Articles featuring students or teachers from the school
  • Various articles mentioning various internal or external activities or events at the school, or events featuring the school in some way, sometimes including short descriptions and/or contact info (e.g. phone number, street address, URL) for the school
  • The following sources are easily confused; 2 and 3 are very similar but not identical, as shown by the sentence in the middle of the quotes.

AvH also works with Montreal's Goethe Institute to promote German theatre and the arts.

For Radoslav Holúbek, to help demonstrate notability. It is known that he is mentioned somewhere in the book, although the depth is uncertain.

Thanks, BeanieFan11 (talk) 00:42, 13 February 2024 (UTC)

@BeanieFan11: How did you find that he's mentioned in there? If you're able to determine the page number, I can request a scan from OCLC 40418362 via interlibrary loan. I'm in the US, and Google Books isn't even letting me search within the book, but are you able to search it from where you are?
If needed, I guess I could request the whole book and try to look through it myself, but I don't read Slovak, and I don't know if it has a useful index or table of contents, and I'd rather not look through 211 pages, so that might be too difficult.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 05:18, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
@Sollyucko: I know he is mentioned in there because when I searched for "Holúbek Radoslav" (in quotes) on Google Books on 6 February, that book showed up as the only result, meaning there must have been a text or metadata match. It didn't say the page number, and frustratingly now when I search for that phrase GBooks says no results. Using some context we know about the person (i.e. his time period and event), we would have to find him in the whole book, I think. --Habst (talk) 13:31, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
@Habst:
Got it, I figured it was probably something like that, given how finicky and inconsistent Google Books is. Should I try requesting the whole book, then? Once it arrives (probably in a number of weeks), I'll send you the front and back matter, and you can let me know where you think he'd be most likely to be mentioned, and then I'll try to look through those parts to see where specifically he is mentioned.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 15:16, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
@Sollyucko, okay, that will work. Thank you for doing this by the way, it is much appreciated. --Habst (talk) 15:19, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
@Habst: Alright, sounds good; I've requested it, then.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 15:26, 8 March 2024 (UTC)
@BeanieFan11 and Habst: I've received this, but why are there two of you? Sending copyrighted materials to multiple people seems possibly legally unfavorable, so I'll do my best to select just one of you.
If you're still interested, contact me via Special:EmailUser so I can send you files. If you're not interested, please let me know by any method so I can be aware.
I'll give User:BeanieFan11 priority due to initiating the request, but if User:Habst wants to do it, and User:BeanieFan11 doesn't reply for some unspecified amount of time or confirms they're not interested, I'll go ahead and work with User:Habst.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 21:35, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
@Sollyucko: Sending to Habst would probably be better, given that he was leading the way for the article to be kept and was the one who originally found the source. (I'm also too busy to spend much effort in looking at the source currently.) BeanieFan11 (talk) 21:40, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
Got it, thanks for letting me know. I've gotten an email from Habst asking for it, so I'll work with them, then.
FYI, I didn't get a ping, since I think it needs to be on a new line to work, but I get notifications for all non-minor edits to the page, so I saw it anyways. Sorry that my signature is different from my username.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 22:16, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
@Sollyucko, I've sent you an email, thanks. --Habst (talk) 22:13, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
@BeanieFan11 and Habst: I'm having trouble finding any mention of Radoslav Holúbek in this book. I checked all the chapters and sections with no date or with a date on or after 1994. For alphabetical lists, I looked for both "Radoslav" and "Holúbek"; otherwise, I skimmed the whole thing. Should I look for any earlier years or any other spellings of his name?
If I don't get a response in about a week, or if my loan is recalled sooner, I'm planning to return the book then.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 23:14, 24 March 2024 (UTC)
@Sollyucko, thank you so much for your help with this, also apologies for my slowness to respond after the first look. The bottom line is, when I try to search for "Holúbek Radoslav" in quotes on Google Books, you can see it shows up as a result: https://www.google.com/search?q=%22Hol%C3%BAbek+Radoslav%22&tbm=bks. I even archived it to show that: https://web.archive.org/web/20240325182121/https://www.google.com/search?q=%22Hol%C3%BAbek+Radoslav%22&tbm=bks. I first found the book on 6 February, but then on 8 March when I tried the same query I got no results, and now when I try the query again I do get the book as a result.
Yet when we tried to look in the book, we couldn't find the name. As a hobby programmer, I'm very confused about this, because I don't see how Google could be displaying this book as the only result for the query in quotes if the search term wasn't present. At the same time, I don't want to hassle Sollyucko any more as it seems like he has already put in significant effort and time to search through it, and he has already looked through all of my recommendations based on my read of the front matter. For the next person to pick this up, maybe contacting the book author would be the best next step. Thank you again to Sollyucko. --Habst (talk) 18:29, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
@Habst: Yeah, I see it now too, huh. It shows up without a page number and is marked as "No Preview", and the metadata doesn't mention a library they obtained it from, so I don't know if they have the full text but are refusing to share it, or if they only have metadata.
As a test, I tried searching Google Books for various phrases in the book, and only some of them include the book in the search results, so I'm very confused. I suspect that at least one of the following is taking place:
  • I keep making typos
  • Google has a bad OCR of the book
  • Google only has text for part of the book
  • Google is intentionally hiding some results due to copyright/licensing restrictions
  • Google doesn't actually have full text for the book, and is just guessing based on the book's metadata and references from other sources to the book
  • IDK what else could cause this, but let me know if you think of any other possiblities
Google Books is super useful, but its search results are so finicky, inconsistent, and unreliable; I find it very frustrating...
I plan to hold on to the book for a few more days in case anyone has any more ideas or anything else they'd like me to try, but I'll need to return it eventually, and I'm not sure there's much point in keeping it for too much longer.
Solomon Ucko (talk) 19:05, 25 March 2024 (UTC)
@BeanieFan11 and Habst: Running out of ideas and seeing no response for a week, I'm going to return this book. I guess this request is {{resolved}}, then?
Solomon Ucko (talk) 17:03, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
@Sollyucko, OK, thank you for your help. I also don't have any more ideas, other than contacting the author or looking elsewhere for sources. Another possibility is that Google is using some form of AI for searches, and it is simply "guessing" that the quoted search terms are in this book because of the related topic. I wish it was more transparent. --Habst (talk) 17:18, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
@Habst: Yeah, I guess so... I'm wondering about contacting Google, but I'm not sure how likely they are to respond... I guess I'll return the book now, and if we come up with any more leads for where to look in the future, I can try to request it again.

Index request

{{Resolved}} Sorry everyone, one of these again! But if anyone's got access to the following, could they look up "Green, Henrietta" in the index? Google shows me no preview, and its not on IA (that I can see, anyway!) Much appreciated if possible.

Thanks! ——Serial Number 54129 18:14, 3 April 2024 (UTC)

@Serial Number 54129: What do you want to know about Henrietta Green? The "Food and produce" section of the book is written by her. – Doc TaxonTalk15:06, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
Blast! Thanks Doc Taxon for that effort, and sorry—the no-preview Gbooks blurb gave no indication that it was an edited collection. She kickstarted the market's modern success until they subsequently banned her, which sounds tasty, but I guess that's more likely in a history section. I guess even PST allows her views on the thing she's best known for *scratch chin* ——Serial Number 54129 16:11, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
@Doc Taxon: apologies, I was slightly vague back then—but, to clarify, would you happen to have access to that chapter, by any chance? ——Serial Number 54129 15:31, 13 April 2024 (UTC)
@Serial Number 54129: You mean the "Food and produce" section? Let me look for it – Doc TaxonTalk05:51, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
@Serial Number 54129: Sorry, I can't get this book to scan the chapter. Look for another user here having access to it. Kind regards – Doc TaxonTalk13:33, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
No worries Doc, it would've been a very-primary source, so only of peripheral interest, I imagine. Thanks for going to the trouble anyway! ——Serial Number 54129 13:53, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Star Trek as Myth: Essays on Symbol and Archetype at the Final Frontier

I would greatly appreciate the following chapter to help with my rewrite of the Kes (Star Trek) article. This should be my last request for this particular project. While I can access a lot of this chapter on Google Books, there are still some missing pages that I would like to look through.

Thank you in advance! Aoba47 (talk) 22:05, 15 April 2024 (UTC)

Zenit/Impresiones Zenith

Greetings, has someone access to "Chávez, José Antonio Chávez. La erupción del volcán Misti. Zenit, 1992."? It's probably the same source as "Chávez Chávez, J. A. (1992). La erupción del Misti. Pasado, presente, futuro. Arequipa: Impresiones Zenith. doi, 10, 5420913." For Misti

Thanks, Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 14:26, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

You can search through it on Google Books (shows snippets, but only 3 matches for each search query) and HathiTrust (shows all results but only the number of occurrences on each page). If you have specific pages you're interested in seeing in full, I can try to request a scan of OCLC 32864001 via interlibrary loan. It's in Spanish, and I can read Spanish, so let me know if you'd like me to translate anything. Alternatively, if there are specific questions/topics you're interested in, I can try to look for those for you, and let you know what I find. Solomon Ucko (talk) 07:37, 16 January 2024 (UTC)
@Sollyucko: I mostly need to know whether there is any information in that source that isn't yet in Misti. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 07:47, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

Geografía regional de Arequipa

Greetings, has someone access to "Palomino, Jaime Daniel Rivera. Geografía regional de Arequipa. Universidad Nacional San Cristóbal de Huamanga, 1995."? For Pichu Pichu, Chachani and Misti.

Thanks, Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 13:28, 10 February 2024 (UTC)

Searching HathiTrust for the names of those articles finds pp. 3, 7–8, 11, 27–28, 30–41, 49, 63–65, 67–68, 71–72, 80, 87, 91–92, 97, 102, 104, 106, 107, 109, 112, 134–135, 144, 160, 193, 224, 226–227, 233, 270, 274, 278. I have a 30-character limit, so I guess I'll add some context and merge some of these, and then put in two separate ILL requests for pp. "-12,26-42,48-50,62-113,133-45" and "159-61,192-4,223-34,269-".
Solomon Ucko (talk) 20:08, 18 February 2024 (UTC)
I've put in these two requests back-to-back, so hopefully that'll help them process it more easily. Solomon Ucko (talk) 19:15, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
Both of my requests have "been cancelled by ILL staff for the following reason: Multiple Articles/Chapters Requested at Once. You have requested more than one article or book chapter in a single request. Due to copyright restrictions, you must submit each request individually." Should I try to request the physical book, then photograph the exact set of relevant pages myself?
Solomon Ucko (talk) 21:10, 19 February 2024 (UTC)
Up to you. It's not an urgent request. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk) 10:58, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
Makes sense. I've requested the physical book. Solomon Ucko (talk) 17:38, 4 March 2024 (UTC)

Need Russian Language Paper about megaliths of Mount Kuilum (Mountain Shoria)

It is a long shot that anyone will find it, but every other option, including interlibrary loan has yielded nothing. Any help in getting a copy of this paper will be appreciated.

  • Беспалов, А. Г.; Астахов, С.Е.; et, al. (2015). "Мегалиты горы Куйлюм (Горная Шория) (Megaliths of Mount Kuilum (Mountain Shoria))". Почвоведение (Soil Science): 410-423.

For Gornaya Shoria megaliths

If anyone has any questions feel free to ask. Paul H. (talk) 18:45, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

@Paul H.: Isn't it this?Doc TaxonTalk21:07, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
@Doc Taxon: No that isn't. It is a four-page conference "paper" by the same name. It has made looking for the other paper quite complicated. Paul H. (talk) 23:51, 16 April 2024 (UTC)
but I can't find any Беспалов paper in Russian 2015 Почвоведение (410–423 or anywhere else) – Doc TaxonTalk15:49, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
After your search, I am going to have conclude that my source likely conflated Беспалов et al. (2016) with another paper in Почвоведение and created a corrupted citation. Your efforts are well appreciated. My aopologies for wasting your time. I am going to find an index for the 2015 Почвоведение just to see what, if any, paper was possibky conflated with Беспалов et al. (2016). However, I can do that when I need a respite from the extremely acrimonious geopolymer papers. {{Resolved}} Paul H. (talk) 16:35, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
