During the war, Varivode and the surrounding area were incorporated into ]. In August 1995, Croatian army forces under the leadership of ] killed at least 12 elderly Serb civilians, some of them disabled, who had stayed in their homes on the eve of the invasion of ], and burned the village to the ground. Few Serbs have returned to the village; according to the 2001 census, Varivode currently has only 93 inhabitants. |
