Sir Wilmot Hudson Fysh KBE DFC (January 3, 1895 – April 6 1974) was an Australian aviator, best known as one of the founders of QANTAS. As a result of his development of QANTAS into one of the most successful companies in the world, he was knighted.
Early Life
Fysh was born in the city of Launceston in Tasmania, Australia, on the seventh of January, 1895. His father, Frederick Wilmot Fysh, was a merchant, while his mother, Mary Fysh, was the daughter of a famous landowner, Henry Reed. He was also the great-nephew of Sir Philip Fysh. In his childhood, his parents divorced, as a result of his father's failing business. Fysh stayed with his father, but ran away to see his mother in many occasions, so eventually he was allowed to stay with his mother.
Fysh was educated in the Launceston Grammar School and the Geelong Church of England Grammar School, and became a jackeroo and woolclasser after his education.
Life in War
Fysh joined the army in 1915, when he was 20 years old. He serve at Gallipoli, Senai and Palestine, in the 3rd Regiment of the 1st Australian Light Horse Brigade for the Australian Imperial Force. For his services in the Imperial Forces, Fysh was commissioned as lieutenant, in 1916, for the machine-Gun squadron, but was transferred to the Australian Flying Corps. Reviewing his time in the brigade, Fysh commented that:
We lived like rats in their holes, and hung on to our hillside with the enemy on one side and the beach a few hundred yards away on the other.
Fysh transferred from the Light Horse Brigade to the Royal Flying Corps No. 67 squadron, serving as an observer and gunner. He was then transferred to the No.1 Squadron of the Australian Flying Corps. In the Flying Corps, Fysh teamed up with a pilot, Paul McGinness, as he does not know how to fly an aircraft. Together, they fought in the Palestine Campaign, and were heavily involved in action against the German and Turkish aircrafts. As a result of his services to the Flying Corps, Fysh was awarded with the Distinguished Flying Cross. In February 1919, at Heliopolis, Fysh received his flying license.
Establishment of QANTAS
His experiences led him to believe in the benefits of aviation to the communities of outback Australia. In 1919, he and Paul McGinness surveyed the Longreach - Darwin leg of the air route to be used in the first England to Australia air race. In 1920, he and McGinness became two of the founders of the Queensland And Northern Territory Aerial Service, now known as QANTAS. His career from that time on was aligned with the fortunes of the airline, even after it was nationalised in 1947.
Sir Hudson Fysh became managing director of QANTAS on January 22, 1934 and held this position until June 30, 1955 where he was both managing director and chairman of the QANTAS board from July 1, 1947 until June 30, 1955 and was then chairman of QANTAS from July 1, 1955 until his retirement on June 30, 1966.
