Liviu Librescu (?-April 16, 2007) was Professor at Department of Engineering Science and Mechanics at Virginia Tech and Holocaust survivor. Dr. Librescu was murdered in the Virginia Tech massacre along with 31 other students and faculty members.

Life and career

Librescu was an accomplished scientist in Romania. The Communist regime had tried to prevent him from making aliyah to Israel. He was allowed to leave the country only after Menachem Begin, the Israeli prime minister at the time, appealed the matter to President Nicolae Ceausescu.

Prof Librescu immigrated to Israel in 1978. Several years later, Librescu left for a sabbatical in the United States and has remained there since.

Librescu received his Ph.D. in 1969 from Institute of Fluid Mechanics, Academy of Science of Romania.

Sacrifice

He sacrificed himself by holding onto a hatch preventing the gunman from entering the lecture hall while students attempted to escape through windows. He was among the 33 people dead in the Virginia Tech shooting incident on April 16, 2007.
