John Mitchel McLaughlin (born 29 October 1945) is the General Secretary of Sinn Fein and an MLA.
McLaughlin was born in Derry city, Northern Ireland and educated at Long Tower Boys School, Derry and Christian Brothers Technical College, Derry.
He is an elected member of the Northern Ireland Assembly for Foyle.
In March 2007, McLaughlin topped the poll during the 2007 Assembly election for the South Antrim constituency.
Author Niall O'Dochartaigh quoted McLaughlin as saying he had joined the republican movement in 1966, and stayed with the Official IRA after the 1970 spilt but then later joined the Provisional IRA.
He is married and has three sons.
