I'm so sorry for JarrahTree's family for their loss. JarrahTree and I often exchanged emails and he was a very decent man with a wide range of interests. He was also passionate about Misplaced Pages and I enjoyed collaborating with him on several articles, including by helping him with information on Australian military history and appreciating his input on all matters concerning Western Australia (on which he was an absolute font of knowledge). I'm terribly sad to hear this. Jarrahtree was my first "wiki-friend" and we exchanged many emails over the years, so I was very glad to to meet him at last at Wikicon last weekend. JT and I became friends when I attended my first Perth Meetup (organised by him) in April 2013, after being an editor for several years without ever having met any other Wikimedian face to face. Over time, especially in light of my personal problems in recent years, he became probably my best friend, on or off line. As well as seeing him at Wiki events both here in Perth and elsewhere, I often spoke with him on the phone, and visited his and Annie's home for a chat. As others have written, he had a very wide range of interests, something he frequently demonstrated to me by flitting from one topic to another at the drop of a hat. Indonesia and his beloved Wheatbelt rail project were two of them. He was also interested in Tibetan Buddhism, amongst other topics. Recently, while planning my trip to Indonesia for the Wikisource Conference, I told him I was thinking of changing planes at Semarang on my way from Bali to Kalimantan. He replied that Semarang was one of his favourite places, and suggested that I also visit some others in Sulawesi and Papua. For practical reasons I didn't take up his suggestions, but decided to stay a night in Semarang instead of going to Kalimantan. I also intended to tell him of my decision, but hadn't yet got round to doing that before it was too late. So I guess my forthcoming visit to Semarang will now be an homage to him and his great interest in Indonesia. RIP mate. Bahnfrend (talk) 02:02, 7 December 2024 (UTC)
JarrahTree's loss will be felt throughout the Australian community and we have lost a truly great man, both on and off wiki. He was smart and kind and passionate about so many topics. I both loved and hated when he would find pages I was preparing in my sandbox and get excited about them - however, it did motivate me to finish them and finish them well! I loved his calls which could range from seconds to... much longer... He loved his family, he loved Misplaced Pages and he is one of the clearest examples of 'nerd joy' I can think of. My apologies for adding this here, but most of my interactions with JarrahTree on-wiki were in regard to COI editing, which was my focus rather than his. (Off-wiki we had a lot of discussions, but they were more general than what I am looking for now). I have finally got a bit of time on my side, and I would love to work on bringing an article that JarrahTree cared about to FA (or whatever I can actually achieve). For those who knew what articles JarrahTree really cared about, is there something that I should be working on? JarrahTree meant a lot to all of us, so I would like to do some work that respects what he wanted to see done on Misplaced Pages. Normally this would be fairly easy to determine, but JarrahTree edited so much and so widely that I am having trouble identifying the right article, and thus I am hoping that someone else knows what direction I could go in. @Bilby: The thing is that he had such a wide variety of interests; I'd say the top 50 or so of the articles listed in his topedits report reflected his priorities. The problem is that he probably had the most expertise and widest reading list (!) in those particular subjects out of anyone here. I don't think he was that concerned about raising articles to good/featured status; he never commented on a featured article candidacy, for example. He was more concerned with offering a helping hand to colleagues (both on- and off-wiki), maintaining/organising WikiProjects, and keeping articles free of bad edits. I agree with what Graham has said. As far as I know, JarrahTree didn't have any particular favourite articles, just general topics he was interested in, which can be seen from the userboxes on his page. Last year JarrahTree and I had a brief exchange on my talk page over the state of the article on the Royal Society of Western Australia, which is still only a stub, and a poor comparison to the equivalent articles on the learned societies in other states such as the Royal Society of New South Wales or the Royal Society of Victoria (though, as he wrote, they could all do with more work!). I'm currently doing a deep dive, via Trove, into the history of the Adelaide Philosophical Society, which later became the Royal Society of South Australia; there must be lots of people with WP articles who played a role in the formation of the RSWA, or who were members, or award recipients. The (APS/)RSSA article also has a lot of redlinks, which points to a dearth of articles on notable scientists, a topic I've been exploring in relation to the recent South Australian Museum controversy; this may also be true for WA. Thanks! I'm currently at a bit of a rememberence session for JarrahTree, and that came up as something other people remember him for as well. He certainly understood the importance of wikignoming.
