John Hemsley Pearn
Emeritus Professor "John Hemsley Pearn", AO, GCStJ, RFD(Rtd),BSc, MBBS(Hons), MD, PhD, DCH, FRACP, FRCP(Lond), FRACP(Edin), FRACMA(Hon) (born 1940) is a retired Australian paediatrician and academic, former Surgeon General of the Australian Defense Force, historian author, educator, and polymath.
Pearn’s clinical interests include general paediatrics, medical genetics, clinical toxicology, tropical medicine, accident prevention and safety promotion. Pearn has published over 700 peer-reviewed articles and over 60 books.
Pearn served at the rank of Major General in the Australian Army as Surgeon-General of the Australian Defense Force. He saw active duty in Vietnam (1966-67) and Papua New Guinea (1978). He has studied, worked and served with the United Nations in the British Parachute Regiment) and in the post-genocide emergency in Rwanda in 1994 and 1995.
Awards and Honours
The plant species Androcalva pearnii was named in Pearn's honour, in recognition of his contributions to medicine, education, humanitarianism and as an author of medical and botanical works.
Additionally, Pearn had had a species of spider named in his honour, Ozicrypta pearni, in recognisiton of his many contributions to child health, medical history, and spider bite (arachnidism) in Australia.
