Flooding in the Maldives is due to its tropical monsoon climate, which is characterized by two distinct monsoon seasons, the northeast monsoon and the southwest monsoon. The southwest monsoon, which occurs from May to November, brings significant rainfall, leading to floods. According to the reports, there were 128 reported flooding incidents in 2022. Floods in the Maldives are also caused by heavy rainfall, inadequate drainage systems, sea level rise associated with climate change, and tidal surges.
