History
Main article: History of Croatia
In 1918, Austria-Hungary disintegrated after being on the losing side in WW1. Three of its peoples, the Croats, Serbs, and Slovenes, formed a kingdom known after 1929 as Yugoslavia. Following World War II, Yugoslavia became an independent communist state under the strong hand of Marshal Tito.
Croatia declared its independence from Yugoslavia in 1991. After that a rebellion of the disenfranchised Serb minority started, resulting in the about a quarter of the territory (populated mostly by Serbs), becoming a separate statelet. It took 5 years of fighting before most of the Serbs were expelled by the Croat army and the state liquidated. Under UN supervision the last Serb-held enclave in eastern Slavonia was integrated into Croatia in 1998.
