Mentone Grammar School (formerly known as simply The Boys' Grammar in the local community) is an independent grammar school in Mentone, Melbourne.

History

The school was founded in 1923, and up until 2006 Mentone Grammar was a boys-only school. The school announced its co-educational intent in July 2005.

The bayside school attracted widespread attention in 2005 when it announced plans to enroll girls, after a merger proposal was rejected by nearby Mentone Girls' Grammar School, its sister school. The move prompted a deep rift in the school community and led to a damaging media campaign which was further backed up by the 2006 VCE results which explicitly demonstrated the superior academic standard of Mentone Girls Grammar students in comparison to those of the under-par female students attracted to Mentone Grammar school due to an overzealous scholarship campaign . The co-ed controversy resulted in the formation of the Mentone Grammar Schools Parents Association (MGSPA).

The School has adopted an untested parallel learning approach, where boys and girls are together from Kindergarten-Grade 5 and from Grade 5-Year 9 the two are separate, and in the VCE years, Years 10-12, there are mixed classes again. The school was once the best boys school in the area .

In 2006 Mentone Grammar had 161 female students out of a total of 977 students, and the board expects the numbers for boys and girls to grow in 2007.

In December 2006, Headmaster Tim Argall lost his job, with the school's board citing "irreconcilable differences" due to the character and morals held by Mr. Argall . The school currently has not appointed a headmaster however there have been numerous applications for the job despite rumours of the school being involved in full blown underground drug circles.

Cadet Unit

The Mentone Grammar School Cadet Unit is now 64 years old, and once boasted strength of nearly 400, making it one of the biggest Cadet units in Australia. However, there are now only 6 days in the year that are dedicated to cadets, and training is rushed for the approx 110 students involved.
