Captain Jack Sparrow

Jack Sparrow is a pirate. He used to command the Black Pearl, searching for a legendary cache of Aztec gold—but his crew mutinied and marooned him on an island, alongside a pistol with a single shot (in order to kill himself instead of letting starvation kill him). However he escaped, and went looking for revenge against the leader of the mutiny: First Mate (now Captain) Barbossa. He kept the pistol and shot for the purpose of shooting Barbossa with them.

One of his characteristic attributes is a slightly drunken walk (more of a stagger, accompanied by very random flailing hand gestures) which makes him look unfocused—that may partially be a ploy to put people off their guard but is falsely attributed to the heat stroke he was rumored to have suffered when marooned. However, he instead spent the time marooned cavorting with rum runners, and thus, was unlikely to have suffered anything worse than a severe hangover. His drunkenness could also lead to his tendency to slur his speech.

Another characteristic of his is a quite atypical (for a pirate) altruistic nature, as he often puts himself in harm's way to save other people, notably Elizabeth Swann. It can be assumed that Jack's more kind nature is part of the reason why his crew mutinied, due to the fact when Jack suggests an unviolent way to find a piece of the Aztec Gold on the Interceptor, Barbossa claims, "This is what lost you the job in the first place, Jack. People are easier to search when they're dead."

At the end of the first film, Jack is once again the Captain of the Black Pearl.
