Stepanakert is the capital of the self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh Republic.

Prior to the start of the Armenian-Azeri conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh the town produced half of the industrial production in the region. According to last 1989 population census the population of then Stepanakert was 53,600 people.
