The Basilica of San Gaudenzio, the highest point in Novara and one of the most recognizable buildings in Piedmont, was built between 1577 and 1690 following the destruction, ordered by Charles V, of the old Basilica.
The Basilica itself was built by Pellegrino Tibaldi; however, the monumental cupola was designed Antonelli (who also built the Mole Antonelliana in Torino).
