A ''switch'' is a device for making or breaking an electric circuit. usually it has two pieces of metal that touch to make a circuit, and separate to break the circuit. The pieces are always selected to have minimal corrosion, because most metals form insulating oxides that would prevent the switch from working. One way is to have noble metals. Abother way is to arrange the metal pieces so that they wipe each other off. A final way is to use nonmetallic conductors, such as conductive plastic.

One of the most reliable forms of switch is the mercury switch. The advantage is that the liquid metal mercury flows around obstacles.
