The word "Gampaha" in Sinhala is composed from 2 words – "Gam", which means village and - "paha", which means five - literally meaning "Five Villages". The five villages in the Gampaha city is Ihalagama, Pahalagama, Medagama, Aluthgama and Yagoda. Gampaha is about 4km from Miriswatta on Colombo-Kandy road. Gampaha is surrounded by Yakkala, Miriswatta, Minuwangoda and Ja-ela towns.
