Regarding slakr:

Why did my page get deleted? Please see Misplaced Pages:Why was my page deleted? first. I have no idea what you're talking about. What's vandalism? If you received a warning from me and you're not logged in, you might have gotten an old warning I sent to someone who shares your IP address. On the other hand, if you've made recent edits and received a recent warning message from me and you genuinely believe that it's not vandalism, don't fret-- simply drop me a message below, because I could have simply made a silly mistake. :)

Regarding SineBot:

Why does SineBot keep signing stuff I've already signed? All comments should have a signature that includes both a link to your user page (slakr) and a datestamp (05:12, 20 August 2007 (UTC)) (per signatures - internal links). This is most easily generated by placing four tildes (~~~~) at the end of your contributions, which makes something like "slakr 05:12, 20 August 2007 (UTC)".

If you have an interwiki-linked user page, consider either creating a user page on enwiki that redirects to your preferred home wiki or simply opting out of automatic signing.

If you're still having problems after trying that, post a message below. Be sure to include diffs to make sure I can reference the problem. I don't want my comments signed by SineBot. How do I get it to ignore me or my talk page? Please use one of the opt-out methods listed on its user page. SineBot forgot to sign something it should have signed. Usually this happens because the bot isn't sure if it really should sign something, so it defaults to not signing it (e.g., in cases of complex edits). It does this to avoid being annoying. Other times, a comment might be made when the bot is down for maintenance, so the bot simply never sees it. SineBot signed something that it genuinely should not have signed. Please let me know-- especially if you think it's not a one-time thing. Be sure to include diffs to make sure I can reference the problem. Is SineBot's source code available? Not currently. I'm signing with four tildes (~~~~) but it's still saying I didn't! You likely enabled raw signatures. Open your preferences, click the "User profile" tab, make sure that "Treat the above as wiki markup" is NOT checked, and click Save; it should be fixed. If you have an interwiki-linked user page, consider either creating a user page on enwiki that redirects to your preferred home wiki or simply opting out of automatic signing.

SineBot source code

Hello. Is source code of your bot available for download? I was asked to run a signing bot on another project, so it would be quite useful (there is no point in re-inventing the wheel:). Invisible Idiot (talk) 12:19, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Hello. I think you missed my question (excluding my nick it was serious). Invisible Idiot (talk) 12:43, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Ah, yes, I think this was the issue. Hello :) Actually, I also spotted your bot in action and would be extremely happy to make it possible for it to work on plwiki, which is my home project (as well as the Invisible Idiont's, who's known as Beau on plwiki). Cheers. Wpedzich (talk) 10:38, 28 February 2008 (UTC)
Well... If you didn't want to share it with us you should have written it. The worst kind of refusal is deferment... Invisible Idiot (talk) 15:05, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
*breaks cheerful and lighthearted demeanor for a moment*
First and foremost, deferment isn't the worst kind of refusal— refusal is. I would have just said "no" if I never intended on releasing it, but as you'll see from my talk page archives, I actually was planning on doing it at some point in the future.
Another idea: you might consider living life from another person's perspective and attempt to understand possible motives for certain actions he or she may take. With enough experience in coding, you quickly realize that very unskilled, unimaginative, and otherwise selfish people are more than happy to run off with your code and claim it as their own work— sometimes for a profit— while you sit there in stupor wondering wtf just happened, all the while every last drop of your generative drive is sucked away, leaving you feeling unmotivated, alone, and betrayed.
As a result, I'm slightly less than eager to wantonly release code on-demand any more— particularly if I've started a project with internal motivation and have put a decent amount of work into it to fix the many bugs/issues people have brought up. Of course, it doesn't really help that there are sites out there that, at the same time as running Mediawiki, indirectly and/or directly blast the very people who help maintain it, either. It also doesn't help that people come along and say that I shouldn't have even written something at all if I'm not going to by-default let everyone and their mother use it for whatever purpose they want and/or proceed to repeatedly post to my talk page in an effort to get their way.
*returns to cheerful and lighthearted demeanor*
So, who's up for some strawberries? --slakr 17:27, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
Hello. Thanks for your response. If you don't want to publish it now, no one is going to make you (esp. when your bot is doing great job:-). I will have to start from scratch, however I think your changelog and user complaints on your talk page will be quite useful. Cheers. Invisible Idiot (talk) 21:52, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

SineBot Mistake?

Hi, Slakr. I noticed at the end of user talk:Tom Butler when I was commenting earlier today that user:Martinphi added a comment , then went back and added an extra link within that comment , which SineBot then signed . If it is relevant, Martinphi and I were editing that section at the same time, and had an edit conflict, so my posting occurred between his comment and addition. It seems to me that SineBot didn't need to sign this, and the final product (at the end of Martinphi's first post in the section) looks a little odd to me. I just thought you'd like to know in case this indicates a problem with your Bot. Best, Jay*Jay (talk) 13:39, 26 February 2008 (UTC)

Just a quick follow up - is this an actual bug, or have I misinterpreted, or ...? Jay*Jay (talk) 13:22, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
It's kinda sorta a bug. It's mainly more of a limitation. There was an intermediate edit, so the bot didn't assume the person was editing their own post (i.e., it didn't see a signature within the diff). I'm in the process of writing a parser for wiki headers and text block detecting so as to reduce its dependency on the limited scope of diffs, but I've been fairly busy with several projects :\. --slakr 17:34, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Lol, I was like "wtf? I never edited that article," and then I realized that I removed a backlink. :P Cheers :P --slakr 01:30, 27 February 2008 (UTC)
Sorry about that, it was a scientology article, so I was doing my best to follow every letter of the law (notify all contibuters). You where actually one of the few, so I just went down the list without looking at what you actually did.Coffeepusher (talk) 22:19, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

Unblock

Hey, a user has asked for an unblock, regarding an OP block you did. User talk:Redboy442, regarding User talk:222.127.228.6. I scanned it, and, nothing obvious jumps out at me, but, I stuck to well-known ports. Either way, I generally prefer to block OP's AO ACB, when other users may get caught up in it. I was wondering, if you could re-examine this IP, and, the unblock request I noted above? Thanks, SQL 12:05, 3 March 2008 (UTC)

(root@stewie:pts/4) /home/koder # nmap -sS 222.127.228.6
Starting nmap V. 3.00 ( www.insecure.org/nmap/ )
Interesting ports on (222.127.228.6):

23/tcp open telnet

8082/tcp open blackice-alerts
Nmap run completed -- 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 8 seconds

Port 80, while it looks like a normal httpd process, is actually an open proxy. Try it out yourself. I'm also not too sure about that particular user's recent contributions, considering the only thing he has added recently was a questionable link, while the proxy has been used for extensive vandalism. --slakr 23:05, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
Oooo, and it looks like it round-robins its outbound IPs... I'll block this one too. --222.127.228.5 (talk) 23:09, 3 March 2008 (UTC)
Roger that, Odd that I didn't catch the port 80 one. Thanks, for checking it out! Great work! :) SQL 05:01, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

I noticed that you'd recently left a message on this user's talk page relating to vandalism to Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I just wanted to let you know that this user has also been vandalising the page for Racing game. I've cleaned up the page, but felt taht I should let you know that he doesn't seem to have stopped. Many thanks Gazimoff (talk) 15:04, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

User talk:Elz old granny nottttttttttt!

I wonder if you might explain more fully why you regard this an inappropriate user name. It's unusual, certainly, but I don't see what guidlines it breaches. Regards, Mannafredo (talk) 12:41, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Usually I'll block usernames that make themselves unnecessarily long by repeating letters at the end because they're confusing and are almost always used disruptively (e.g., to vandalize). Either way, I simply softblock so that they're free to create a new account outright and go right along their merry way. :P Cheers :) --slakr 12:44, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

Slakr, you told me that i vandalise "List of Bleach Character". You know, I NEVER open that page. And I NEVER share this IP-Address with anyone. I NEVER editing page in Misplaced Pages (English). So, you must be making a mistake.

As I stated in my FAQ at the top of this page, if you have no idea what I'm talking about, ignore it, as your IP address was likely assigned to someone else before you (back in december). Cheers =) --slakr 14:08, 5 March 2008 (UTC)

re: copyrighted...

i dont think u know what ur talking about sorry...if allowed copyrighted image then allowed copyrighted lyrics also. anyway it is really only the music that is copyrighted... no1 goes to the record store to buy a copy of pink floyd lyrics lol they go to buy the music...it would b bad if we had the music on the site but it just the lyrics...there are lots of free sites where can get lyrics from and it eaasy to pirate the songs too so i dont think pink floyd care about lyrics on wikipeda. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.194.217.186 (talk)

Signbot Oopsies

Here's the diff.

I am pretty sure I know what's going on here. I have a non alphanumeric username and am linking through the romanized version of my username which redirect to my correct username, but signbot is signing it anyway. I realize this is probably more of a coding headache than is worth fixing, but I thought it might be worth noting for anyone else who decides to follow wikipedia's suggestion when they have foreign character usernames Does signbot look to make sure that the user links to their own talk page?

The easiest logical solution I can think of from a programming perspective would be to check if the username links to their own talk page, and if not, check to see if that talk page is a simple redirect to the proper one before having signbot sign the comment.

Let me know if you need any more clarification or want me to test anything for you!

 --Peco! Peco! 00:46, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

I have temporarily corrected the problem with SineBot automatically signing your comments by adding ] to ペコペコ user page. If you wish to hide this category on your user page, you can instead add {{NoAutosign}} instead of the category. Anyway... hope that helps (for the time being at least). Lightsup55 ( T | C ) 01:01, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Correct. The bot does not actually load a user's page to check to see if it's a redirect, as it has way too much stuff to do already. :P --slakr 07:24, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Understood. However, don't you think signbot ought to be following policy, though? This is going to happen to anyone who follows the policy that also has a non-roman username... Yeah? Just a thought. I don't suppose there's a way for signbot to simply keep a list of non-roman usernames on wikipedia and ignore them so long as they link to *some* usertalk page?  --Peco! Peco! 21:08, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Sinebot detection algorithm

Hi - Per this edit Sinebot is signing edits made by this anonymous user who I believe is manually signing using 5 tildes to produce the date. Any chance you would consider changing the detection algorithm to consider something that ends in a UTC date (without a link to a user or talk page) as a sig? -- Rick Block (talk) 01:58, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Please see WP:SIG. --slakr 05:06, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I gather you mean "no"? I've suggested this user obtain a userid, although I think a user entering "this is me ~~~~~" at the end of a post is clearly signing. Yeah, there's no link but anyone actually interested can always find it from the article history. -- Rick Block (talk) 05:50, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Signing is four tildes (~~~~), which automatically puts a link to the user page + timestamp, as per WP:SIG. --slakr 06:00, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I know how one autosigns and what happens. However, I am puzzled by your seeming resistance to entertaining this idea. Are you saying an anonymous user who types "Matt ~~~~~" is not making a good faith effort to sign? In this case, the user's IP address seems to move around a bit so what he's doing is actually MORE informative than four tildes. Or are you worried about spoofed sigs? Or is there some other issue I'm not seeing? -- Rick Block (talk) 13:56, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm not assuming bad faith or anything— nor does the bot. If anything, the bot serves to gently introduce people to the concept of signatures, how they work, and how to properly use them. I was also considering adding a small link to the tutorial into {{tilde}}. In any case, if a particular user's signature fails WP:SIG, the bot will let them know after they do it a few times, and the problem is solved. Also, if I changed the logic to acknowledge only datestamps as a valid signature, then it renders its {{unsigned}} functionality that drops the time argument useless, which will cause people as well-meaning as you to come storm to my talk page demanding I program the bot to only use {{Unsigned|User}} instead of {{Unsigned|User|Date}}, as well as the {{Undated}} stuff useless as well.
Trust me, I've already been through this dance, so feel free to surf my talk page archives if you have free time to see how easy it is for people to complain to me about the color of the bikeshed. :P Of course, I figure that if someone else wants to make something better, than they're more than welcome to do so. Cheers =) --slakr 14:06, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

User:Slakr/Sandbox/Why you shouldn't vandalize

Another editor has added the {{prod}} template to the article User:Slakr/Sandbox/Why you shouldn't vandalize, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but the editor doesn't believe it satisfies Misplaced Pages's criteria for inclusion, and has explained why in the article (see also Misplaced Pages:What Misplaced Pages is not and Misplaced Pages:Notability). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Misplaced Pages or discuss the relevant issues at ]. If you remove the {{prod}} template, the article will not be deleted, but note that it may still be sent to Misplaced Pages:Articles for deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. BJBot (talk) 07:03, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

A very strange proposed deletion. Enigma 07:07, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
It was because someone put a {{prod}} on {{inuse}}, so it affected every single page marked as inuse. I've since fixed it. :P --slakr 07:15, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I think we both got there at about the same time, but you saved first. I have now protected the template {{insue}} to prevent a repetition, but if you are wondering why my edit summary says that i fixed the prob, it's cos I thought I had fixed it by my save, not realising that you had got there first. Sorry!
The {{prod}} template should really be fixed to prevent it triggering millions of prod-warnings from the bots if added to a template. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 07:23, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Misplaced Pages:Deletion_review/Log/2008_March_6#Encyclopedia_Dramatica

Curious about the revision of my comment, admittedly I am not familiar with the ins and outs of wikipedia guidelines, so I'm sorry if I stepped over the line in some regard. My guess would be the listing of the vandals IP address in the comment. If this is the reason I don't especially mind, although I would be interested in knowing which Misplaced Pages user utilizes that IP if you have the ability to use checkuser on them. I believe it is pertinent to the ongoing debate over the inclusion of the ED article, especially concerning issues of NPOV which have come up. --24.23.212.107 (talk) 07:18, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

You listed a bunch of wikipedia admins with what looked like edit summaries they clearly did not make. Moreover, whether someone has been vandalizing the site mentioned in the DRV is irrelevant. --slakr 07:21, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
The edits weren't made by administrators, they were made on ED by the account User:FaggotryreignsED (as noted in the post that was reverted). You can verify this by checking that account's contributions at ED (I can't provide a link). I don't think it was fair or appropriate to revert the IP's edits - a polite request to refactor, however, might have been in order (listing the edits, as opposed to merely mentioning the account name, somewhat disrupted the flow of discussion, even if unintentionally). --Iamunknown 07:39, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Sorry, like I said I'm not terribly familiar with all the ins and outs of TOW formatting and general courtesy, I plead ignorance on my part. --24.23.212.107 (talk) 08:47, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
It's still irrelevant, unless I'm missing something; for, I'm not sure how vandalism on another site has anything to do with whether the page is deleted or not. --slakr 07:42, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I tend to agree with you regarding relevance. I do not think, however, that a legitimate (if arguably irrelevant) post should be reverted. I, for one, am not aware that it is regular practise to revert such posts. --Iamunknown 07:46, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I didn't list edit summaries that THEY made in particular, I listed a group of ED articles that were just vandalized by a particular individual, in a seemingly non-coincidental way in regards to the revival of the attempt to re-create an ED article on Misplaced Pages. While this may not directly be relevant, I feel that the act of someone who is obviously very personally involved in Misplaced Pages/ED drama to deface our wiki could very well be related to the discussion we are currently having. Especially in regards to the question of NPOV of the parties involved. Permit me to degenerate into internet speak to illustrate this point. butthurt fgts from TOW are trolling our wiki because they are pissed someone had the cojones to re-create that shitstub. The notice on the talk page in and of itself is enough for anyone to see there are some obvious conflicts in interest in regards to this article. ""The article on Encyclopedia Dramatica will not be recreated. Ever." I think that in and of itself is enough to raise some question of NPOV, and places the burden of neutrality on Misplaced Pages to be transparent in its operation. --24.23.212.107 (talk) 07:48, 7 March 2008 (UTC) *edit* ie: what happens on our wiki as retaliation is very relevant for current arguments on Misplaced Pages as several admins involved in the AfD process obviously have personal investments in the issue, and have abused their admin privileges to influence votes and have made the permanent deletion of this article a personal pet project. If you checkuser the abusive IP, if it is not a proxy, would show who involved in the current debate has gone to unprofessional and extraordinary measures in regards to this matter, which would go towards the question of NPOV. --24.23.212.107 (talk) 07:56, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I was going by our talk page guidelines for removing stuff not directly related to improving (or, I guess, in this case, undeleting) the article. If, however, you truly feel that it's imperative that it be part of the discussion, then by all means readd it— I won't revert it, because I don't really care. :P However, please try to relate it directly to the deletion discussion and why the article should be undeleted based on your comments. Cheers =) --slakr 07:58, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks, I will later, I'm at a friends place and don't have the time I'd prefer to type out a thoroughly thoughtful response. But, I would like to note that I really appreciate the professional way you have handled this matter, and the polite way you've communicated with me. Most of the time I even mention I have anything to do with ED I get the perma-ban hammer from blokes. Anyway, take care, and I hope to receive your feedback on this matter in the future if you somehow find yourself entangled in the shitstorm this will unfortunately inevitably result in. I hope it will be more civil and reasonable, but I'm not going to hold my breath. --24.23.212.107 (talk) 08:06, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Heh, I usually don't fly around blocking people left and right— I usually save that for vandalizing schoolchidren instead. :P --slakr 08:12, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

On the contrary, it would be rude of me not to thank you for your advice. Though, it does beg the question: if I have no life by blocking vandals from editing, then what kind of life do you, our precious vandals have? Sure, I do this kind of thing with my friends and we enjoy it, but vandalism seems like such a lonely activity. Though, this activity is not without its perks; for, us admins also get to see chicks in bathrobes, which is more than I can say for most vandals. :P --slakr 12:23, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Three-revert rule violation on List of Sort Codes of the United Kingdom

Can you please reconsider this result. The editor concerned is continuing to make disputed edits here. Chrisieboy (talk) 14:07, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

I've made some minor style and formating tweaks, none of which Chrisieboy has disputed on the talk page. I thought it was the bigger style change to the tables that was the issue. However, if minor edits are also ruled out, then I'm happy to stop. In the meantime, I've been accused of lying by Chrisieboy (about the removal of my comment on the third user's talk page, and despite giving the diff showing that action, an apology was refused ), and Chrisieboy still won't explain exactly what his/her problem with my edits is.
It's all very unhelpful and unconstructive, and my only motivation continues to be to improve this article, which I'd like to be able to get on with. I've no problem with criticism, but none has really been given yet (or not in any more detail than 'I don't like it').

Am I being wikistalked..? Chrisieboy (talk) 14:50, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I think it's called 'right of reply'. Suggest WP:AGF as another policy to review. 136.8.152.13 (talk) 14:54, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I removed my own comments and this was reverted against my will on several occasions. On one such occasion, unfortunately, the anon's comments were also inadvertently removed. This was an error on my part, although one which would not have occurred had the anon desisted.
In any case I await your response to the above. Chrisieboy (talk) 15:10, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
I'm sorry, but that's just completely wrong. Chrisieboy's removal of my comment was that user's first move on that page. I couldn't have reverted the removal of comments before that, as that was the first time anything was removed. How could I desist from doing something I hadn't yet done? Chrisieboy was intent on removing my response to his/her comment out of context, when policy says that if a comment is retracted it should properly be struck-out, rather than completely removed in such cases. 136.8.152.13 (talk) 15:23, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Not done. Judging by the contributions by both users, there is now extensive use of the article's talk page as opposed to edit warring. Please remember to be civil, and feel free to post another three-revert rule report should there be any further issues. --slakr 04:24, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Hey Slakr. I'd like to move to unblock the above editor on the basis of this unblock request and on a general assumption of good faith. Thoughts? AGK (contact) 19:45, 7 March 2008 (UTC)

Cheers for your response—hopefully the editor will make good use of their second chance... All the best, AGK (contact) 12:26, 8 March 2008 (UTC)

Re: SineBot

I got a friendly notice from your bot to remind me to sign after posting various RfA optional questions. But the problem is, the current nom doesn't require us to sign and timestamp it. OhanaUnited 02:58, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Matt Sanchez is back as 208.54.95.41 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · filter log · WHOIS · RDNS · RBLs · http · block user · block log) having posted offensive and wiki-threatening material to Benjiboi with these diffs, and identifying himself here. I will remove the Benjiboi material, and notify him - which will make a red link above, I guess. Thanks, Jay*Jay (talk) 04:29, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Deletion of "investing strategy"

Back in June 17, 2007 you deleted a page I created called Investing Strategy. You called it copywrited. I cannot figure out how to 'see' that page now, so I cannot review it. I presume you know how.

Can you please say what exactly was copywrited. Since it was mostly word-for-word what I have posted on my website I do not want to be in infringment there either.

But really, I do not believe anything was infringed. In fact the whole point of my website is to post the truths that are not available ANYWHERE else on the web. Certainly, if you thought the Wiki page was the same as my webpage, that is no problem. I certainly do not copywrite it ... I encourage its dissemination. minor bug in sinebot

I added a subpage to my user talk page called sandbox. What was sinebot doing there? I added a "NoAutosign" link so it's no big deal, but I still thought I should put in a bug report. Phil Burnstein (talk) 21:27, 9 March 2008 (UTC)

Browsershots

Hi. I was about to ask the same thing, but saw you already had: Misplaced Pages:Village pump (technical)/Archive 18#robots.txt / browsershots I don't know as much about it, but think it would be very useful to have available, especially for the folks at WP:Accessibility and WikiProject Usability. Any chance I could encourage you to pursue this idea again? (I wouldnt know where to start, outside of the pumps...) Thanks. -- Quiddity (talk) 01:48, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Browser problem and IP address

For some reason my login goes away when I open a new window. Therefore accidentally my IP address has appeared in recent undo of 'Carnatic Music Article'. I will look into it and fix it. Meanwhile, please remove my 'undo' with IP address ? I will reenter with my signature. Thanks for your help.Naadapriya (talk) 06:34, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

Wow, you must be hard up for work if you're vandalizing wikipedia at 4 in the morning. It sucks that you're not churning out good albums like you used to and that you've relegated yourself to this. No worries, though, I won't delete your account, but I have taken the liberty to block it so that you will get off your butt and start writing good songs again. --slakr 09:10, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

SineBot editing excluded(?) page

Hello, here to bug you about your bot. Earlier today, an IP editor left a comment on my talk page but forgot to sign it. Naturally, SineBot dutifully came by and added the unsigned template here. Problem is, I have the {{bots}} template on my talk page header here, which is in turn transcluded onto my talk page. What I'm not sure about, and why I'm contacting you about it, is whether this is SineBot ignoring the exclusion template for some reason, or if he's simply not seeing it because it's transcluded through another template. If that's the case, then it would be my fault, for which I apologize for bugging you about it. Either way, thanks for your time. Hersfold 04:02, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Yeah, it doesn't see it because {{Bots}} produces no visible output; and, the bot doesn't check pages recursively. Simply add {{bots}} to the talk page (instead of the header) and it will bother you no more. :P Cheers =) --slakr 11:45, 12 March 2008 (UTC)
