Canadian Forces Base Comox, commonly referred to CFB Comox, is a Canadian Forces Base / airbase located on Vancouver Island, in the province of British Columbia, Canada. It is British Columbia's primary military air installation.
The complex also serves as an airport for commercial flights (callsign YQQ) to Vancouver, Calgary, and elsewhere. Every second year the base has an Airshow to celebrate Armed Forces Day. The base is a primary employer in the Comox Valley.
History
The base has it's origins in 1942, when an airbase was constructed to guard against any possible Japanese threat to North America. The Royal Air Force was the original occupant, with the Royal Canadian Air Force taking possession in 1943.
Current Use
CFB Comox is host to 19 Wing, which is in turn comprised of 407 Maritime Patrol Squadron, 442 Transport and Rescue Squadron, 19 Air Maintenance Squadron, and a number of other organizations. It is also the location of the Canadian Forces School of Search and Rescue, where all "SAR" (Search And Rescue) Technicians, or para-rescue specialists in the Canadian Forces, undergo the majority of their training.
