Gothic has been used over the centuries to refer to distinctly different things.
- Originally a group of Germanic tribes (the Goths) and their language were called Gothic
- Later the word (here originally a derogatory term used by Italians) referred to a style of northern European architecture, i.e. Gothic architecture
