John Lenders MLC is the Treasurer in Victoria, Australia. He was appointed to this position in August 2007 following the appointment of new premier John Brumby. Lenders is also the Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council.
Previously he has been the Victorian Education Minister; Minister for Finance, Major Projects, Workcover and the TAC.
He is currently one of the five members elected to represent the Southern Metropolitan Region. and is a member of the Malvern branch of the Australian Labor Party.
Prior Positions
Lenders entered parliament after the 1999 election, and has held the positions of Minister for Finance, Minister of Industrial Relations, Minister for Consumer Affairs, Minister for Workcover and Minister for Major Projects. As Minister for Industrial Relations he championed the Federal Awards (Uniform System) Bill, which sought to provide Federal award employment protection to Victoria's non-award covered workers, which was passed by Parliament in 2003.
He had previously been the State Secretary and Campaign Director of the Victorian ALP from 1994, a position now held by Stephen Newnham.
Family & Education
John is the son of dairy farmers from Gippsland, and is married with three children. He grew up in regional Victoria, before moving to Melbourne for tertiary education.
Lender's studied education at Rusden after attending Trafalgar High School; and then went on to study law at Monash University
