Alexandre (often anglicised to Alexander) Dumas, père (1802 - 1870) was an early French novelist. He created some of the most memorable and long-lasting swashbuckling stories, including:
- The Three Musketeers;
- The Man in the Iron Mask;
- The Count of Monte Cristo;
- Queen Margot
- La Dame de Montsoreau.
These stories have been filmed many times, and they have also been adapted into movies, cartoons and other formats.
His son Alexandre Dumas, fils (1824-1895) was also a celebrated novellist in his own right. His most famous novel La dame aux camélias was the basis for the opera La Traviata. It is available on line in its English translation Camille at Gutenberg:
