It is located in the Gegharkunik province (marz). It has a population of 12,363 and it was settled by Armenians from Western Armenia in 1830. There are Bronze Age tombs and a large late 19th/early 20th century Astvatsatsin church, built on earlier foundations. Surrounding the church are fine khachkars and tombstones of a 16th century burial ground.
