A medical degree is title conferred on students by a college, university, or professional school on completion of a program of study that prepares them in the prevention, diagnosis, and care of human or animal health. The succesful completion of a degree does not automatically permit its holder to practice in their field of medicine. Most jurisdictions require licenses to be issued by the appropriate regional board.
Medical degrees in the United States
In the United States, the following medical degrees are recognized by the U.S. Department of Education:
- Doctor of Medicine (M.D.)
- Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.)
- Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine (N.M.D) or Doctor of Naturopathy (N.D.)
- Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine
- Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S) degree and Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D)
- Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (P.O.D)
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M) or the less common Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (V.M.D)
