Gibbons broke into British Comics quite quickly working on horror and action titles for both ] and ]. When '']'' was set up Gibbons was brought in as an Art Director and to draw one of the original strips '']'' as well as the occasional ]. After the first year Gibbons switched to '']'', a cherished project for Gibbons who was a fan of the original series. Gibbons also drew a spin-off the '']'' strip and a couple of two part stories of the original '']'' story. Gibbons’ last work for ''2000 AD'' was the first run of '']'' of which he was also co-creator, after which he concentrated for a time on '']''.

Gibbons was one of the British Comic talents identified by ] in 1982 and began drawing '']'' for DC. He is best known in the US for collaborating with ] on the comics series '']''. Amongst '']'' fans he is known as the original artist on '']'', drawing the lead comic strips for most of the issues from #1 until #69.

He also contributed to the ] ] title '']''.

His most recent work (2005) is a self-penned black and white graphic novel, ''The Originals''. Published by ], the work is set in the near future, but draws heavily on the imagery of the ] and ] of the ].

His current projects include the DC Comics mini-series '']'' (which ties into the upcoming '']'' event miniseries) and '']''. Gibbons also provides the cover artwork for '']'', the ] series plotted by ] and written by his daugther .
