In the movie Los Angeles serves as a micro-environment for these signifiers, each character showing the ways in which individuals will use the signifiers when interacting with other members of their community. Crash is a 2005 drama film directed by Paul Haggis. It premiered at the Toronto Film Festival in September 2004, but was released internationally the following year. The film is a social commentary on racial and social tensions in Los Angeles. It was a critical and box-office success in the early summer of 2005.
