Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is a controversial guru, associated with Transcendental Meditation and the Beatles.
Maharishi graduated from Allahabad University with a degree in physics. He studied for thirteen years with Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, the Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math. Then in 1955, after spending two years in silence in the Himalayas, he began teaching his Transcendental Meditation technique. In 1957 Maharishi founded the Transcendental Meditation (or TM) movement and began the first of his many world tours to bring his technique to people on all continents. He has written a number of books on Vedic wisdom and the Vedas as the science of consciousness.
Maharishi has used modern technology to further his teachings -- he has created the Maharishi Open University as an online teaching outlet, he has a weekly video press conference and uses satellite and the Internet for his Maharishi Broadcasting.
He also initiated a new type of currency, the RAAM.
