After the original British series won two Golden Globes, an American version of The Office was created by NBC Universal. Though it retains the same title, the American version of the show is set in Scranton, Pennsylvania. NBC has described it as a faster-paced version of the original; Gervais said before the premiere that it would probably have actors with better teeth. Creators Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have production credits on the new show, but they are not otherwise involved. The first episode of the American series duplicated the first episode of the UK series almost word for word, with only names and cultural references changed. All the characters have been renamed and re-cast with American actors, the most notable being Steve Carell as Michael Scott (the equivalent of David Brent).

Producers, directors and writers known for innovative work in U.S. comedy TV have contributed to The Office. Simpsons writer Greg Daniels is one of the main producers. Paul Feig of Freaks and Geeks fame is directing some of the episodes. And Ken Kwapis, who established his ability with the genre in The Larry Sanders Show and Malcolm in the Middle, directed the pilot and has produced/directed several episodes.

The show has been somewhat less successful than the British series; it was cancelled in Australia after only one week on the air (although, half of the first season was shown during this first week), but continues to draw reasonable ratings in North America. A new (possibly 13 episode) season began on NBC in fall 2005. Despite all of this and hostile British loyalists, the show is considered by some a cult hit.
