Alan Shefman is currently the city councillor for Ward 5 in the City of Vaughan, Ontario, Canada. He was elected to this position in a by-election in 2004 following the resignation of Susan Kadis upon her election to the Canadian House of Commons Previously, from 2000 to 2004, he served as a school trustee of the York Region District School Board.
Professionally, Shefman has a long history in human rights in Canada. From 1980 to 1988 he was the national director of the League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith Canada. While serving in this position, Shefman was called upon to advise the Crown Prosecutor in the Alberta hate crimes trial of Jim Keegstra. In 1988, he took the position of director of communications and education for the Ontario Human Rights Commission. In 1994 he left the commission to start his own human rights consulting firm.
From 1997 to 2000, he was a Trustee for the Vaughan Public Library Board. From 1979 until 1983, he was a member of the York University Board of Governors.
