Laurie Brett (born 2 May 1970) is a Scottish actress, currently known for her role as Jane Beale in the BBC soap opera EastEnders, in which she has starred since 2004.
Personal life
Brett was born in Hamilton, Scotland. She studied at the London Studio Centre. She is fluent in Spanish. She supports Friendship Walks for the Breast Cancer Campaign and has participated in various charity events.
On the Richard & Judy show, she revealed that she speaks with a strong Scottish accent. However, on moving to London, she dropped the accent and can speak as a Londoner - fitting for her EastEnders role.

She has toured with Circo Magico, a travelling circus, in Mexico and Central America, played a prostitute in the London production of the musical Les Misérables (her singing and dancing skills have made her a regular in the musical theatre), starred in fringe productions, and appeared in the UK Tour of The Rocky Horror Show as Magenta, starring alongside Jason Donovan as Frank.
Brett made her television debut as an office girl in London's Burning in 1992. She has appeared in several television advertisements, including most notably Learn Direct Scotland commercials.
She made her first appearance in EastEnders in June 2004, at which time the character was known as Jane Collins. The character was widowed within months, and in 2007 married Ian Beale.
TV appearances
Since appearing in EastEnders Brett has made a variety of guest appearances on British television shows including GMTV, This Morning, Richard & Judy, The Paul O'Grady Show, Entertainment Today, School's Out, Saturday Kitchen, and Comic Relief Does Fame Academy.
She participated in the 2007 and 2008 Children in Need telethon appeals where she sang alongside the rest of the EastEnders cast; in the latter, she was cast as Mary Poppins.
