Alan Shefman is currently the city councillor for Ward 5 in the City of Vaughan, Ontario, Canada.
Early Life and Education
Born on April 2nd 1949, Shefman grew up in Toronto, Ontario. He attended York University where he received a Bachelor of Arts, after which he went to Carleton University where he received a Master of Arts in Canadian studies, writing his thesis on United Empire Loyalists in Upper Canada.
Career
Professionally, Shefman has a long history in human rights in Canada. From 1980 to 1988 he was the national director of the League for Human Rights of B'nai Brith Canada. While serving in this position, Shefman was called upon to advise the Crown Prosecutor in the Alberta hate crimes trial of Jim Keegstra. In 1988, he took the position of director of communications and education for the Ontario Human Rights Commission. In 1994 he left the commission to start his own human rights consulting firm.
Political Career
From 1997 to 2000, he was a Trustee for the Vaughan Public Library Board. Shefman has a long history of involvement with York University. From 1979 until 1983, he was a member of the York University Board of Governors. Prior to that he served as President of the York University Alumni Association. Currently he is a fellow of McLaughan College and an Associate of the York University Centre for Practical Ethics.
In 2004, Shefman was elected to Vaughan City Council for Ward 5. He was elected to this position in a by-election following the resignation of Susan Kadis upon her election to the Canadian House of Commons. Since being elected to City Council, Shefman has spearheaded a new recycling program for the City of Vaughan.
Previously, from 2000 to 2004, he served as a school trustee of the York Region District School Board.
