Spartacus was the name of a Roman slave who led a large slave uprising (73-71 B.C.). He was defeated by M. Licinius Crassus. Spartacus was a native of Thrace, a region to the north east of mainland Greece long considered especially barbaric by the Greeks.




A historical novel of that name about him, by Howard Fast

was filmed by Stanley Kubrick, starring Kirk Douglas
