Sydney, capital city of the state of New South Wales in Australia, and Australia's largest and oldest city. It has a population of approximately 4 million, and was founded as a convict settlement in 1788. (See First Fleet).

The city's most famous landmarks are the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and the Sydney Opera House.

Sydney has 6 universities: the University of Sydney, the University of New South Wales, Macquarie University, the University of Technology, Sydney, the University of Western Sydney, and (one of the campuses of) the Australian Catholic University.

Sydney also has an interesting subway system. (Melbourne is the only other city in Australia with one, but Sydney's is older and more complex.)
