The Hawiye tribe is one of the largest Somali clans. They live mostly in central and southern Somalia. It is largely agreed that they descended from the Somaal, ancestors of the Somalis. Some sources, including Human Rights Watch, indicate that Hawiye is the largest Somali clan. Conversely, the Canadian Report of the Somalia Commission of Inquiry shows Darod as being the largest.
